He hadn't meant to be here tonight, at this place of people who found themselves lost on the path of life. His friend had dragged him here, ignoring his complaints, telling him it was time for him to go out and actually so something fun for a change. He asked his friend how getting high an arrested for DUI was any fun. His friend was silent after that.
So there he was, alone in a sea of people who were either too drunk to notice him or thought they were too cool to care. He recognized some of them. They had gone to high school together, but not college. He made it, but they did not. It was there he saw her, with her white-blond hair and gray-green eyes.
She looked so different now; her hair was longer, her skirt has shorter, and her eyes were duller. He found it kind of strange. He tried to remember what her name was: Katherine? Katrina? Katarina? That was it! She was Katarina, but everyone called her Kat for short.
He walked up to her and introduced himself as an acquaintance from high schools. She stared at him blankly for a moment, but then a look of recognition flashed through her eyes. "You're David, right?" she asked. When he nodded she smiled, just the littlest bit. "We had Ms. Jones for first period together. I remember you now," she said. Then she laughed. "You know," she giggled, "I never really thought if you as the party type."
"I could say the same to you," he replied. A pained expression crossed her face for a second, but then she smiled again, but not as brightly. "A lot has changed," she sighed, "A few years ago you couldn't pay me to be here."
"So then why are you here now then?"
"Would you believe me if I told you I didn't know myself?" she said sadly, walking towards the back door. He followed.
