The pitter patter of rain hitting the window was calming, like the feet of mice running across the floor, at least that's what CAT thought as she sat in her bed against the window, looking out into the grey and gloomy streets as it gets pelted by the rain.
She sat with her knees up against her chest as she hugged her legs, trying to keep herself warm without the help of her bed blanket that smelled like burnt rag and outdated soap. Her pink night dress wasn't helping either, it was so thin the coldness rushed throughout her entire body like she was a ghost, that's all she felt like anyway, a ghost amongst the other children, and a curse amongst the other caretakers of the orphanage. She sighed and looked around the room, hoping to find something to distract her from the cold.
"One...two...three...four...five..." She began counting the beds in the room for the third time tonight. She knew how many beds there were, who slept in them and even how long it takes for each child to fall asleep. But when you're someone like CAT, it's the only sort of entertainment you can come up with in times like hers.
Half way through counting, a woman opened the door of the room and stepped inside as CAT quickly grabbed the blankets by her feet and pulled it over herself when she lied down, pretending to sleep. The woman slowly walked around the room, checking every bed in the room to see who was awake. Every step got louder and louder as she got closer and closer to CAT's bed, until she got to hers and took a quick peek before continuing along her path and then eventually leaving the room, closing the door behind her.
CAT took a deep sigh and moved around in her bed, trying to get comfortable on the uncomfortable bed. She pulled the blanket up to her nose as she thought to herself; "I hate orphanages"
CAT took another look outside the window and the rain, she watched as it rushed down from the sky in a mesmerizing motion. Her eyes felt more and more heavy the longer she watched, until eventually they closed and CAT slowly drifted off into slumber.
The sound of baby wales could suddenly be heard. It was dark and nothing could be seen in sight. There was nothing but the cries of a baby and the strange sound of something quickly and lightly hitting the surface of something made of straw and wood. The patters and wales continued as they got louder and louder until, a small break of light from above began to grow bigger and wider. And then, a shadow figure of a person was revealed, and the soft voice of a woman could be her; "It's okay now my child, you are safe" before everything faded to white.
CAT jolted up in her bed, breathing heavy like she had ran a marathon with soft tears running down her cheeks. She sat up straight and hugged her legs as she buried her face into her knees and sobbed.
