Both chained to separate sides of the room

One cannot see

The other cannot speak

The blind talks, not even sure if there's another person there or not

The mute listens, forced to hear the blind's raw emotions that could all be the subjects of the universe's best poems and writings and their pure, unfiltered thoughts that could make even the best of philosophers stop and think for hours.
and they cannot respond.

They are forced to just sit and watch the blind lose hope in getting even a simple "hi" or "hello" and slowly fall into the most severe of depressions

And this goes on for months.

But one day, the mute is able to speak! Oh what a glorious day!

While the blind goes on their usual one sided conversation and of the day, the former mute speaks and says

"I am here. I'm real, I promise."

-HAPPY END-

The blind stops talking, slowly processing the new sound. They start to smile then the smile evolves into a giggle then into a full blown laugh. Not if insanity or anything of the likes, but of pure, raw happiness.

"I've waited for so long.
Thank you, my friend.
Thank you for responding."

-SAD END-

The blind keeps talking, seeming to ignore the former mute. They speak again, thinking that the blind must've thought their voice was just another cruel joke of the mind; and illusion. The short sentences slowly morph into screams, begging for the blind to acknowledge them. It was only then, when they had gone mute again from screaming so much that the blind wasn't just blinded,

They were deafened as well.
The two fall into insanity, one knowing about the existence of the other but not being able to interact, and the other not knowing the other existed at all.
