We are on a roof. Not on sentry duty but watching our forces light up the night sky. Some men are sleeping, despite the continuous noise of 60mm Illuminating mortar rounds being fired to light up the night sky.

I am sitting here, a few feet away from the parapet with my Galil on my lap, rethinking about my life, and then, there's this corporal sleeping peacefully beside me, and then there are people sleeping peacefully in their homes, people sleeping right below us, while we're on their roofs, firing live mortar rounds. I don't think I can sleep in all the noise.  The end of the war is near, I can sense it. But I don't like the fact that we're lighting up the sky, why would we need to illuminate the sky anyway. Most probably it's for the Kataeb party members, our Christian allies, the phalangists. They were always our ally, but ever since Bashir Gemayel died, they have been desperately trying to help us, get more involved, which I am finding very strange...
