Chapter 1:

Beep...Beep...Beep... After about the third beep from her alarm clock, Cadence was finally forced to wake up and turn the darn thing off. She never liked the thing because it always disrupted her precious sleep. And to her, there was no one else in the world who loved their sleep more than her, well, maybe her dad. She gave it a few seconds letting her eyes adjust to the sun that was oh so nicely shining through her curtains and hitting her straight in the face, "Ugh, why can't it be the weekend already." but sadly it was only Tuesday. With an annoyed huff, she finally lifted herself and sat up in bed, reaching over to the side table and grabbing her phone. As it lit up, she saw she had a few Snapchat and Tiktok notifications along with her usual morning text message from her best friend, Jules. Cadence would say that without Jules, she would probably never get to school on time. As she read the text, she realized that she now only had about sixish minutes before Jules would be in front of her house. With that being said, she practically jumped out of bed to rush and get ready. She was quickly throwing on her favorite black ripped jeans that fit her legs in just the right way and paired with her all but classic ACDC shirt that her dad had gotten her a few months back, along with her maroon converse. Having rushed to put all that on, when she looked at her phone again she saw she had 4 minutes left. So then she headed straight for the bathroom, brushing her hair, brushing her teeth, and putting in her handy contacts because without those, she'd have to wear her glasses, and she did not want to do that. Cadence did not like how they looked on her, so those contacts were like her best friend, besides Jules, of course.

Finally, after that was all said and done, when she looked at her phone again, it lit up with the notification that Jules was right outside. So putting her phone in her back pocket and grabbing her backpack, she headed downstairs. Cadence waved at her dad, who was already on his computer in the office, saying, "I'll see you after school, dad," with a nod and short hum in response she was out the door. Once outside, she saw Jules bopping her head back and forth in her white Jeep. Cadence got to the passenger door and hopped inside, "See, I was right on time this morning Jules," a small bit of laughter came from the both of them as Jules shifted the car into drive before driving off down the street towards school. "I bet you were rushing though, weren't you?" honestly, she wasn't surprised that Jules had figured her out that fast. She had never been known to be a morning person, even when they first met in the second grade. "Hey now, we are not going to be later, and that is all that matters," the car filled with laughter once again as they continued towards school with the soft hum of the radio made up for the rest of the silence.

After a few more minutes of back and forth comments about Cadence not being a morning person, they finally arrive at school. Greenville High School, home of the Stallions. Jules pulled into the student's parking lot and found a place to park. Then both Cadence and Jules grabbed their school bags and headed straight towards the front. They waved and said their hellos to some of their passing classmates before eventually making it to the front. And as they made it to the steps that lead to the front entrance, Cadence caught a glance at her crush of 3 years...Luka Morre, senior class president. Now don't get her wrong, she was a junior and knew that Luka was way out of her reach, but as she would say, a girl sure can dream. Jules was a few steps ahead of her and was almost to the door when she took another glance towards Luka, only to have seen him look directly back at her. Cadence stopped for what seemed like hours but was only meer seconds, completely shocked that the boy she had been obsessing over was literally looking right at her. Honestly, she probably would have stood there shocked for even longer had Jules not grabbed hold of her wrist, making her snap out of her daze. She was utterly confused about what had just occurred but as she looked back at him all she could see was a look of total hatred, and that made her even more confused. Heck, she was so lost in her thoughts she hadn't even noticed that Jules had already dragged her into the building and that they were both at Jules's locker. And almost as if on cue, a sudden pair of hands were being clapped right in front of her face, "Cade, you are spacing out once again. Get a hold of yourself."

It took Cadence a few seconds before returning to the reality that Jules was trying to bring her to. "Sorry, that whole thing that just happened with Luka has got me puzzled." She turned towards Jules before speaking again, "Didn't that look make you feel like he hates me?" Jules tilted her head as she listened to Cadence, " I mean, I don't even really know him, and he doesn't know me... why would he hate me? Did I do something for him to hate me? Jules did I do something stupid?" Cadence then took a breath, having just realized she hadn't taken a breath of air that entire time, which gave Jules the chance to speak," Breathe Cade, I am pretty sure you are just overthinking like normal, you probably just saw him wrong because you were so shocked." Jules looked at her best friend before placing a hand on her shoulder, "Come on now, or we'll be late for Mr. Butler's class, and you know he hates tardiness." Cadence gave Jules a quick nod before turning on her heels to head down the hall to class. A little bit down the hallway on the left was room 217, Mr. Butler's room. They both walked into the room, saying good morning to their teacher before taking their seats towards the back of the class. Now neither of the girls would say that they are hella smart, but they are smart enough to be taking pre-calculus instead of the ordinary junior math course of algebra II. Not much happens during class; they listen to the teacher lecture for about half an hour and then are given the last fifteenish minute to work on the homework. Once class was let out, Cadence and Jules start to go to their separate classes. Jules had environmental science for her second block, while Cadence had art class for hers.

After leaving Jules to head to her class, she made her way down the stairs to room 108, Mrs. Lee's classroom. Honestly, she was dreading going to this class after what happened this morning in front of the school. That was mostly because she shared this class with the one and only Luka. But alas, she had to go in, and just to her surprise, the moment she walked in, she could feel his stare directly on her. Cadence lifted her head to meet his apparent gaze. Just like this morning, his eyes were filled with what could only be described as hatred. After that, she lowered her head, letting her eyes be glued to the floor as she made her way to her seat. Once she sat down, she took a deep breath allowing her body to relax. No matter what happens next, she was not going to let this boy ruin her favorite class. Cadence had loved art since she was a baby; at least, that is what her dad had told her. As she sat in her seat, Mrs. Lee took the attendance before making her way to the board and saying, "Now class, for the next two weeks we will be working on a portrait project." hearing that Cadences heart began to warm, the realistic drawing was her fact thing to do by far. She sat there attentively, wanting to make sure she did not miss anything important, "Now this project will be done in partners. You will draw the portrait of your partner and vice versa. You will have two weeks to get it done and turned in." Cadence wrote down all the details of the project as the teacher continued to talk. "James you're with Alya, Chris is with Sabrina, Cadence you're with Luka..." Shocked. Confused. Mixed Emotions. So many different things were rushing through her head. The boy who seemed to hate her was now her partner for the next two weeks. Without realizing it, Cadence dropped her notebook on the ground, saying, "You have got to be kidding me."
