Reid's POV
This was quite possibly the most interesting day I'd had in months. I sighed, lying sleepless on the tough cabin bed. I rolled over and squeezed my eyes shut, trying to fall asleep.
That wasn't going to be easy.
I thought about the day I'd had. Meeting Jade. Going for coffee with her. I knew it didn't mean anything, it was just a friendly conversation to welcome her. But I found myself wishing it was more than that. She was different from other girls I'd met- Not many read Dickens for fun. The way she spoke. She was intelligent. It was her first day on the job and she'd already taken the lead on the case to a degree. I was surprised she even gave me a second glance.
Earlier that morning, I'd been late to work. I rushed into the conference room, ready to start listing statistics and facts for whatever case we were given. But I froze when I saw her. Glossy black hair swooping just over her shoulders, not a hair out of place. Subtle lines on her cheeks from smiling and laughing. Long, fluttering eyelashes. The dip on her right cheek where she smiled with half of her mouth. And her eyes. Her beautiful, striking blue eyes. Like two spheres of ice were placed in her skull. When I saw her, I stopped in my tracks. It wasn't just her looks, although she was beautiful. I could tell she was different. I passed hundreds of girls on the street every month. None of them affected me with just a glance like she did. It was like we were magnets. At least, she was. And I was just a useless piece of metal.
I roused and got out of the uncomfortable bed. I stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom, examining my tired face. Running a hand through my hair, I sighed and turned around. I walked outside, the door creaking. I looked to my left, a few cabins over. Jade was sitting on her porch, staring up at the stars. She looked so innocent, like a child longing for the night sky. I smiled a bit, and sat on the steps.
She looked over at me. "Spencer?" She called out into the darkness.
"Yeah. I can't sleep." I looked down at the grass.
"Neither can I. The sky always used to calm me. I figured it'd help."
"Yeah, it's really beautiful." It took everything to keep from blubbering facts about stars and the moon. But I didn't think she wanted to hear it.
Her voice rang out. "You know, everyone's so obsessed with the storms on Jupiter that I feel like the ones on Neptune are overlooked. They could swallow the entire planet."
She couldn't see, but I was grinning.
"Sometimes it reminds me just how small we are."
She was right. We were small. Basically insignificant. We would meet hundreds of people in our lives and forget most of them. But I wouldn't forget her.
*Sorry for the short chapter, I just wanted to show how Reid feels about Jade without having to reiterate everything that happened in the first two. <3*
