The Mohs Scale is a system created by Friedrich Moss in 1812, to measure the hardness of crystals. The scale goes as followed:

1. TALCUM- Scratched by all other minerals and easily marked with fingernails.

2. GYPSUM- Can be scratched with a fingernail using greater pressure than needed to scratch a number one material.

3. Calcite- Can be scratched with a sharp coin.

4. Fluorite- Can be scratched with a penknife blade.

5. Apatite-  Can be scratched with difficulty using steel point.

6. Feldspar- Will easily scratch glass.

7. Quartz- Will scratch most common surfaces.

8. Topaz- Can scratch quartz.

9. Corundum- Easily scratches topaz and quartz.

10. Diamond- The hardest natural substance.

Knowing how hard a crystal is can be very useful for storing as well as identifying them.
