the ride

The beginning

Im Lula moon. And it all started on the first day of school 1999.

The school walls stood high like a four walled prison that drains all the energy of its victims six hours a day. I swung the door open of my bumped up Volkswagen and made my way up the steps to the main building. I noticed the band of skater boys to my right ripping it up on the front lawn trying to impress the "fresh meat". I laughed under my breath until I bumped into something hard. Like I mean hard as a rock. It was Chase. my heart skipped a beat. Holy moly did he get shredded. Six pack of lemonade yes please ! His dreamy dark eyes were encompassing. Slight tinges of mossy green trying to escape the the muddy brown which was most dominant on first encounter. And his rugged dark brown hair, tussled and perfect.  I got out of my head and in the moment. 'what a dork' I thought to myself. "Hi" i said boldly, to break this unbearable silence.

"Hi" I heard echoing back to me. Reassuring me like a comfort blanket.

"How was your summer ?" I asked nervously hoping this would end soon.

"Good. But  if you don't mind me saying I don't think i'm the only one who wants to speak to you right now" he said. What did he mean?...

"what do you mean?" I said impatiently and not comprehending his question.

"You got .... hot" he replied. I blushed so hard I knew he could see through my embarrassment. I knew Chase was a player but he was also so dreamy. I didn't understand 'hot' though. I guess i'd had my braces off and got contacts sure, but why should that change anyone opinion on me. Last year I was the shy girl. The girl that went unnoticed, that answered all the questions right. Was this my year?

I turned away from him. I heard the boys whispering and bantering with one another. I held my head high god i I feel like a badass.

Chemistry had just ended and needless to say I had a pretty good day.There was only one girl I hadn't seen yet. "ROSIE" I shouted.she ran at me like a bull after a red flag. 

''You looking good girl" she teased.

"I've been told" I laughed.

"Coffee at The Diner?" I asked.

"You know it" she laughed.

We went to The Diner a few hours later. She was my best friend, we had been best friends for years now and nothing could change that. We were for life. 

"Can I just go for a sec" she asked "I need a fag"

"okayyy. But when do you smoke?" I asked confused.

"uhhhh since forever" she replied.

I was slightly shocked by her reply. I hadn't seen her all summer but she couldn't of changed that much really? I sat on the red leather diner seats alone. I sat repulsed at he sticky fingers pressed on the red seats. They were scuffed and old, abandoned almost, I might have actually been happier siting on grass outside. I pressed my head again the cold murky window. Watching my hot breath turn to fog. I watched her leave the shop, the bell ringing watching her departure. Just at that moment I felt something warm slump to my side. It was Chase.(Rock alert)"I couldn't but help notice you here"he said.

"Well you found me" I said slightly sarcastically.

"Do you wanna get out of here and have some real fun?".....
