Prologue

"Hello sunshine." I looked up into a smile and returned it half-heartedly.

"Hey mom." My voice sounded hollow, like the inside of a tree. It echoed out into the distance. My mother had a light brown dress that perfectly matched her skin color. I studied her face. She had smiling almond shaped brown eyes, a full mouth, a straight nose, and long, thick, richly black hair, which fell in my coffee colored face as she leaned in and gave me a soft peck on the forehead.

I tried to get up from my comfy bed but realized I couldn't move. That wasn't supposed to happen! I tried to reach out for my mom's hand. "MOM!" but she didn't answer.

My mother started to fade into the air. thinking that everything was fine, she said, "Benjie, I made Pancakes!" which she only ever did when it was a special day. I tried to remember what day it is, when suddenly we were on an airplane, which was hurtling toward earth at wind breaking speed. We were about to crash to our death when my eyes Peaked open into slits against the bright sun. I turned my head and watched a huge spider crawl onto my face.

I jerked backward in surprise, and the spider was slung off my face, landing upside down on a greenish brownish floor with dead leaves on it. What the-! I looked around me and groaned as I slowly sat up and leaned against a tree that was apparently right behind me. I was in a clearing surrounded by a thick canopy of thorn bushes and huge trees. Ribbons of sunlight pierced through the branches. There was a backpack sitting messily at my feet. And suddenly, I remembered.
