"Rise and shine, buddy! We got work to do!" I tried to open my eyes, but found that they were swollen shut because of the bugs. I could breath, but it took some effort. The air felt oppressively hot, humid with some thick texture that pressured my lungs. I could only see through tiny slits. My whole face felt swollen And I couldn't even talk. My tongue was numb. The bugs had actually gone inside my mouth and sucked all my blood out! The Bright sun burned my eyelids and face. I groaned as I sat up. Everything was stiff and super sore... and itchy, terribly itchy, like, I want to die itchy. My shoulder was singing with new pain, and the bruise on my forehead was throbbing so hard it felt like my whole head was moving to the pound, like I was Literally listening to a sick beat.
"Mmmmmmmmmmph." I failed to communicate. My throat croaked when I talked and my limbs felt stiff, weak, and shaky. I lay back down, wanting to curl up into a ball and vanish into the depths of nothingness.
In the next moment there was a freezing cold sensation on my ugly, swollen face that Made me jerk up into a sitting position, which did not help my headache, and start coughing and gagging Water out of my mouth and nostrils.
"When you're done feeling sorry for yourself, maybe you can come help me get breakfast." Thomas smiled and slapped me on the back.
His words were like a trigger on a gun. The word breakfast made my head started spinning and my stomach start churning and growling with fresh and ignited hunger.
Thomas smirked. "You gonna be ok, or should I just eat you now?"
I didn't laugh, cause' it wasn't funny. If I wasn't dead inside, I would have hit him with a stick. A really long, hard stick. I moaned and wrapped my arms around my head. I couldn't believe this was actually happening! My mother is dead, I've seen things that I could never erase from my brain, and I was stuck out here in the middle of nowhere trying to survive with some lunatic who splashes water on people's faces at 5:00 AM. At least if felt like 5:00 AM.
Thomas smile disappeared. "Hey, you should be grateful. You've been given something that most people would do anything for, for free."
"And what's that?" The words came out as a weak mumble.
He crouched down and stared straight into my eyes. "A second chance." He stood, and walked away.
