In which y/n offers support to a constantly humiliated Jean.

"Do you guys know where Jean is?"

[Y/N]'s concerned voice made a few heads turn at her friends's table. She'd been looking all over for the guy for ten minutes now, but he seemed to have disappeared.

"Sorry," said Armin with a sympathetic voice. "I haven't seen him since we got out of cleaning duty. He didn't come to dinner at all."

"He's not in our room either!" added Marco, between two bites of bread. "I just came back from there to leave my jacket, it got dirty. I'm kind of worried."

"Ugh," her shoulders fell, "Thanks anyways. He's been distant all week, and now I can't even find him."

Jean and [Y/N] were known to be very close. He was her very best friend, and they spent all the time they could together. At least, that's how it was usually.

"I don't get why you care so much about that horseface, [Y/N]. He's always so annoying. Mean, too! Maybe you're better off like it is now." Eren's voice wasn't the least bit bothered. Armin blanched, scared of the outcome of that conversation.

She sighed. "You don't know him, Eren. Maybe if you two actually had conversations instead of always picking fights, you'd have a decent friendship. Hell, we still have a year of training to go, yet you can't look at him in the eyes."

"Because he's an assho-"

"Eren!" Interrupted Mikasa.

"In any case," continued [Y/N], "I think I might have one last guess at where he is. I'll see you guys later, I have a teenage boy to reprimand."

With that, she was out the door.

Just as she thought, Jean was sitting on that one tree trunk, just besides the little water stream. He went there when he didn't want to see the others, but since those occasions tended to be rare, it didn't come to mind at first. Only she knew about his little spot, Because he wanted to prove his trust in her.

She stopped her confident strut when she realized he was crying. His back was facing her, shoulders shaking at every sob and his head in his hands.

"...Jean?" She tried, in the softest voice she could summon.

"Hi [Y/N]," his voice replied, broken by his sobs. He didn't have to turn around to recognize his best friend's voice.

He didn't reject her, so she carefully walked over to sit besides him. He was still looking at the ground as she run her hand through his hair.

"Hey there, Jean. Is it okay for me to be here?"

"...Yeah. Although- I kind of don't want you to see me like this. I look horrible."

She let out a soft chuckle. "Don't worry about that, you look fine. It's normal for everyone to cry once in a while, you know? It blows off steam."

He sobbed harder.

"I normally- get told... not to cry."

"Fuck that. Cry, curse, scream all you want. I'm right here if you're ready to talk about it. If you don't want to at all, that's fine too."

Her hand on his back felt like balm on a wound. It was so damn cold out here, yet her presence was so warm. The only moments he ever felt understood, ever felt seen, were when she was listening to him. Perhaps that was why he preferred her company over anyone else's.
