I can feel my heart beat faster as I enter the janky elevator filled with unconnected wires and a pile of dirt. Thousands of years hadn't done my paranoia any good, yet I still found myself jumping at the first job opportunity; a technician and janitor at Circus Baby's Party Emporium. If only I hadn't insulted the boss at my last job.
Strangely I'd gotten an email this morning notifying me of my sudden employment, but I hadn't even been to an interview or any of that shit. Hell, I barely qualified in the first place, yet here I am crawling through a fucking vent and spacing out while an AI tells me how to do my job.
I quickly follow my instructions, and wince as sparks fly off each animatronic.
"Controlled shock? It looks like I just zapped the fuck out of them."
"Looks like Funtime Foxy is in perfect working order. Great job! In front of you is another vent shaft. Crawl through it to reach the Circus Gallery Control Module." Handy ignores me, and I shudder as I proceed. "On the other side of the glass is Circus Baby's Auditorium. Let's check the light and see what Baby is up to."
With a tired sigh, I press the button only for a few lights to sputter and admit sparks, and I jump back.
"Looks like a few of the lights are out, but we can fix that later. Let's encourage Baby to cheer up with a controlled shock."
"Is it really necessary?"
"We aren't finished with our duties until you give Baby a controlled shock." The unit answers, "These shocks are just a way to help give our animatronic entertainers an extra spring in their step."
I'm gonna fucking die for this, but I press it.
All. Three. Times.
"Great job, Circus Baby! We knew we could count on you! That concludes your duties for your first night on the job. We don't want you to leave overwhelmed, otherwise you might not come back. Please leave using the vent behind you, and we'll see you again tomorrow."
"Thank fuck. I really did not want to deal with them up close."
The vent crawl back isn't so bad, except for the horrible backache I get from it.
---
I'm halfway into the control module when Handy with the voice of some angsty teen tells me there was a body found in there once. Honestly, I shouldn't care, but I rush anyways. The vents creak ominously behind me as I preform my duties in Baby's module, and I scream as Handy suddenly shuts down the lights and venting.
"I don't recognize you. You are new. I remember this... scenario however. It's a strange thing to want to do, to come here." A soft voice interrupts my string of curse words from behind, "I'm curious what events would lead a person to want to spend their nights in a place like this... willingly. Maybe curiosity, maybe ignorance... There is a space under the desk. Someone before you crafted it into a hiding place... and it worked for him. I recommend that you hurry though. You will be safe there, just try not to make eye contact... it will be over soon. They will lose interest."
I gasp and nod widely into the dark, and slowly back until I hit the desk.
"Who... who are you?"
"...A friend. Hurry, they're coming."
I rush under the desk and shift the metal cover closed as I hear metal creaking from the vent, and I shut my eyes tight as eye appear in the holes. The door shifts suddenly, and I scream as I try to shut it again. Incomprehensible whispers surround me and the desk, and then leave me with my heart beat pounding in my ears.
