What does the taste of freedom feel like?

The book's definition of 'freedom' is the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. But, the experience of being free is a whole other meaning than what you can put into words. Everyone and I mean everyone, has a memory of when they first hear this word. It brings this refreshing and exhilarating emotion that is only reserved for this particular memory.

Mine was about over a year ago.

"(Y/n)!"

The image is still bright within my mind. A sunset rested upon the vibrant sky, going to sleep for another day. The air is cool and crisp making my ears and nose feel the bitter cold first hand but welcomed it nonetheless. Trees lined beside the train track we were walking on, the gravel under our feet tumbled with each step we took.

My chin was tilted up to the sky, examining the way the clouds held a pink hue from the sun's light. In a way, I envied them. All they had to do was float around and do nothing, they even had the best view of every sunrise and sunset!

In the distance I heard my name, making me slightly flinch out of my thoughts.

Someone smacked their teeth. "You scared her dumbass!"

"OW— sorry, sorry!"

I look to the four in front of me, a good distance between us as they waited for me. I guess I spaced out again.

"Sorry!" I yelled. My feet rushed over to them, the arguing coming from Noah and Serena now reaching my ears.

Noah stuffed his hands in a pair of baggy dark-wash jeans, and he's wearing a baggy shirt that draped down to his thighs. Eyes that roam over to me, too, with a soft unreadable expression even though moments ago he spouted harsh words.

"You okay?" He asks a soft smile still on his face, shining his pearly whites. Fluffy brown hair hanged over his eyebrows and shaped his oval face, a beanie hugging the crown of his head.

"'Course I am," I shrugged with the end of my mouth stretched up.

"Mm," Serena raised an eyebrow. She trotted towards me and slung an arm over my shoulder. My eyes were still on the others who continued their conversation. "You can always talk to us, ya know?"

I glance at her. "I know, I know. I'm fine," I slung an arm over her shoulder with a longing sigh, "promise." I played with the collar of her black flannel, under it she wore a black tank top that stopped mid stomach. Her pants are baggy as well with some high-top shoes that she recently bought.

"Oh! I need to tell you what—" She then continued on with some guy that tried hitting on her earlier today or something like that, but I still nodded here and there. But I had to admire the way the sun glowed on her dark skin, emitting highlights on her golden markings that ran across her nose and full lips. How did I end up with such a pretty friend?
