It’s been about a week since the men left for the war, and things are seeming to cool down. Everything was a mess because we have not done a lot of manual labor, this week you could consider it to be a practice week. I got a job as a nurse at the hospital for men who were sent back who were badly hurt and was honorably discharged for working for the Army. It is quit something with all of this, you are running back and forth trying to figure out what you need, and I don’t have a lot of experience in this field. They told us anyone interested in a job that you would schedule am meeting with them, you got asked a series of questions, you shadowed someone for about a day or two then you were on your own because they needed nurses.
I got paid pretty good money too about four dollars an hour, I’m hoping that I if I continue to be a good nurse that I can become a registered nurse because then I could make a lot more and I could help support my family. My mom thought of to create a daycare for peoples kids so that ways she could watch ours and still get paid because a lot of women were needing to put their kids off on someone so that they way they could support their family. My mom told them that for now it doesn’t have to be a lot but that they did have to give her food for their kids because she doesn’t have to money to get food for them right now and it has been going great. She said by the end of the month she would start charging people for the service and that is an amazing idea
“Mom do you have everything ready for the day?” I asked her as I was getting ready for my job.
“No I can’t find that last blankets for nap time for the kids.” my mom answered as she searched around.
“Oh! I’m sorry I took it last night when I came in, it was kind of chilly with the walk home and I felt like I was shivering to the bone.” I went to where I slept and grabbed the blanket. “Here you go Mom. Okay I have to head out or I will be late for work and we need the money.” I said to my mom as I gave her a hug.
“I’m so proud of you honey, you will make a fantastic wife.” My mom smiled at me, I smiled lightly at her and headed out. What she said actually made me rather sad because I find it hard to believe that any guys even close to my age will come back, war is horrible and lots of people die.
It was about an hour walk to the city and all I could think of with the walk here was the war and if I would see my dad again. As I walked up to the hospital there were people already needing my help and so I started my duty once again.
It went on like this for a long time mom did daycare and I worked at the hospital and we were eventually able to repair our house, get beds and nice blankets so we aren’t so cold at night. We were able to get better close again, and we had the best thing of them all…food! I had forgotten what it felt like to be full again.
Dad was able to write us at one point to tell use that he was ok and that he was not in the line of fire, hearing that calmed my heart and made us breathe a sigh of relief. Mom seemed to be in a much better mood after that she had her spark in her once again that I had missed so much. Everything is good and everything will stay good I have hope, the hope that I have had all these years.
