"Mummy , are we there yet?" Little Louis asked , as he tried to look out of the window which was a bit too high for him , his little nose touching the glass and making fog circles.
"Soon darling. "
Louis was usually glued to his mother. Wherever she went , he would follow up instantly , eager to try new things , what he liked to call new adventures. He had this idea in mind that no matter what activity you did, with enough imagination and creativity , it could become an amazing adventure. (And that way of thinking definitly didn't come from his hero Peter Pan, of course not.)
Which brings us to a day before christmas' eve , where he was on the backseat of their family car , bags full of imperishable food on his knees , eyes glistening with excitement as he watched the scenery through the window. Christmas was his favorite time of the year because of two reasons. Firstly, it was his birthday, and each year meant that he'd become a big boy and he wanted to be as big as Peter Pan. Secondly, the ornaments on the streets were so pretty and sparkly , he couldn't resist but have a huge grin as he watched the lights flicker around him. Every blunt object became vivid with just a touch of colorful lights or ornaments. (According to Louis , it was the work of Santa's elves and he is most likely right.)
"Are you excited?" His mother's voice suddenly echoed next to him.
Louis nodded frantically , a huge grin (with few teeth missing) plastered on his face. "It'll be fun!"
Every year , his mother drove to the local foster home (Believe In Magic home for children and teens in need) , a few miles out of their neighborhood , where she volunteered for charity work for Christmas or every now and then. On the 23rd , they would bring presents , prepare a huge meal and spend time with the kids and teens in the Believe In Magic home. Usually , Louis wasn't allowed to go. He was too young his mother said , he would get bored , she'd repeat. Louis didn't agree. He was a big boy now (he was able to ride a bike with no helping wheels since this summer for god's sake!) and really wanted to go with his mother to prove it to her. She gave up after countless tantrums and accepted to bring him with her if he'd promise to be nice. Louis was actually quite serious about it so he sweared on all of his toys and gifts that he'll comply.
Louis fumbled around with his safety belt , eager to get it off and go in as Jay finally parked her car.
''Sweetie ,wait a second. '' Jay tutted. ''You know this is really important , right? Can you repeat what I told you?''
Louis sighed , reciting his mum's words by heart.
''We are helping our friends , so I have to be really nice and really well-behaved if I want Santa to be proud of me . I know that already mummy!''
''Alright then , we're all set. " Jay smiled. "Let's go!"
The mom and the son jumped out of the car and headed to the boot which was packed with a pile of boxes full of more imperishable food , toys and clothes. Some of Jay's colleagues appeared from the foster home's back door and helped her, emptying her trunk. Louis tried to grab a box to help , cause he was that strong , but there was already nothing for him left. Shrugging, he decided to take a much more important role.
''I'm Louis , your captain!" He spoke out, putting his tiny hands on his waist. "Follow me!'' He added, pointing at the building's door. His mother laughed as all of her colleagues jumped in the act , following Louis' small frame , pretending to be soldiers.
