~~~EPILOGUE~~~
Eighteen months later
‘Finding love makes it worth the pain of searching for it.’
Kayla
Kayla watched Trey rock Mikael in his arms, and she felt a pang. He looked up and beamed at her, “He seems bigger every time I see him,” he said with a smile.
She managed a smile back; it was always awkward.
Mikael spluttered, and she got up to take him, “He has a little cough; it’s nothing.”
“Are you sure?” Trey asked, handing him over, and playing with his tiny little fingers. He had gotten so attached to Mikael, he couldn’t believe it. He made his way to the city every weekend, and though he told himself it was mostly to see Chloe, he spent a surprising amount of time at the apartment with Kayla and her son.
Mikael.
She’d wanted to name him after herself, so she’d just gone with the male version of her name. Classic Kayla.
She still lived above the auto shop. After Benjamin was incarcerated, he’d written it all over to Fitch, who relinquished his ownership to Kayla; she needed it more.
Kayla looked up at him and smiled, “He’s fine. We’re fine. Now, don’t you have a flight to catch?”
He patted Mikael’s head and picked up his jacket, “You still going to come to D.C. next weekend?”
“If I can get time off work,” she said hesitantly. She knew that Daisey would let her, but every time she was around Trey, her guilt overwhelmed her.
Trey gave her a pleading gaze, “Come on, Kay. Please? I cleared my whole weekend, and I got a little crib and everything,” he gave her a nervous smile.
When he said things like that, Kayla was surer than ever that she was in love with him. But of course, she was far too late. She’d missed her shot, and even worse, she’d lied to him.
She nodded, “Okay, I’ll come.”
“Great!” he said, heading for the door.
“Hey,” she called as he started to walk out, “Get rid of all those whips and trussed-up bimbos,” she whispered, holding her hand over Mikael’s ears.
Trey laughed, “Don’t worry. I’ll move them to the basement,” he joked, and with a wink, he left.
She let out the breath she’d been holding. She knew she would never be able to tell him, but oh, how it ate at her, because if there was one thing she was even surer of, it was this: secrets – small, medium, large, they had a way of coming out. Always.
The funny thing was, finding out he had a son was probably the key to ending the depravity that was Trey’s life.
Ricky
When you know you’ve already met the one, everyone else is simply: the other.
There wasn’t a day that went by that Ricky didn’t think about Alexandra Worthington. He hadn’t seen her since the day he broke her heart at the back of Daisey’s diner, two years ago.
