A few days later, Louis returned to his home.
Well, it wasn’t really his home anymore, since he was now living at Harry’s castle. He liked it there. He didn’t have to clean up after anyone else, except he always caught himself picking up after Harry because he was a slob and it was just his habit to clean everything. He didn’t have to cook, though he had made friends with the chefs in the kitchen and often shared a cup of tea with them, which he’d brew himself. And he didn’t have to sleep in the attic. Instead he had a room all to himself with his own powder room and walk in closet, which Harry was quickly filling up with clothes. Clothes that weren’t too big or too small. Clothes that actually looked really nice around Louis’ bum, if he was quite honest.
So Louis did not return home, instead, he was just visiting an old place he used to call home. Louis walked up to the door and knocked. Harry stood by his side, holding his hand.
“You okay?” Harry asked, kissing his cheek.
The door opened then, by Verna herself. Shock flashed across her features briefly before a smile graced her face. “Your highness.” She bowed, then stood upright again. “And Louis. I was wondering when you’d pay a visit.”
“I’m actually just here to pick up some of my things, Verna.” Louis said as she let them in.
“Of course.” She smiled cheaply. “You look wonderful, by the way. Both of you.”
Louis wasn’t all that dressed up. He had new clothes on, but they were still common clothes. He still looked ordinary next to Harry, who was always decked out in his finest ensemble. He said it made him happy, just like common clothes made Louis happy.
“Thank you, Verna. If you’ll excuse us.” Louis walked past her, tugging Harry along by his hand, up the stairs.
They traveled all the way up to Louis’ room. Harry frowned at the condition of the room, realizing this is where Louis spent more than half of his life. Louis grabbed a few things out of there before heading out and up to the attic.
“These steps scare me.” Harry commented while climbing. The rickety steps shivered under every ounce placed on them.
“Then hold my hand.” Louis replied, and Harry was quick to do so.
They got to the top and Louis pulled the key out of the basket where he found it the first time and unlocked the door. It creaked open and they stepped inside.
“What’s all this stuff?” Harry asked.
“All my parents’.” Louis said, moving boxes around. “I don’t want Verna having this stuff.”
“Good idea to take it all, then.” Harry said, and started to pick up box after box. He called his little team up and they helped move everything out.
Everything was brought back to their castle (yes, the castle was now theirs, and Louis was thrilled) and they sorted through everything. It turns out that there was a lot of valuable things in Louis’ possession. No one ever went over the terms of his father’s will before, but everything his father owned was left to Louis, not Verna. All the money, all the jewelry, and even the house was his. Louis was quick to work on getting his step-family moved out of there. They opposed, but they were technically living there illegally. Plus, Louis had royalty on his side.
But since Louis wouldn’t be living there, he gave it as a gift to Miss Cox. He knew she was struggling with money, and she always helped him out without expecting anything in return. This house was much bigger and more suitable for a farm than her current home. She couldn’t be more thankful.
Louis sold a lot of the things from that attic and saved all of that money he earned to buy Harry a proper wedding ring. He wanted Harry to know he loved him endlessly. Louis proposed a many months later, much to Harry’s surprise. He was thrilled and of course he said yes.
Louis proudly wore his engagement ring on his hand. He stared at it for hours, wondering how he ever got so lucky. He thought about Niall a lot, the glowing man from his garden. His fairy god father. He wanted to see him again, to thank him, but Louis never met him again. He hoped Niall knew how much he helped Louis. Without Niall, he would still be stuck under the wrath of Verna and Harry might have married Liam or Zayn and everyone would have been miserable. Without that bit of magic, none of this would have happened.
No, Louis thought as he sat cuddled in Harry’s arms. Louis and Harry were meant to be together. It was destined before the magic. Sure, the magic was a sort of catalyst, but it wasn’t necessary. They would have found each other no matter what.
Louis turned over to kiss Harry’s cheek as he slept. The slumbering boy smiled at the affectionate touch and they settled deeper into each other. It was already late, and Louis really needed to get his rest. He had a big day tomorrow.
Tomorrow, he would officially join the royal family.
THE END (And they all lived happily ever after, duh.)
