I got up from the mattress on the floor, Harry was up in the cupboard still. When we had turned 10, only because it was now illegal, me and Harry had stopped sharing a room and after much arguing Petunia and Vernon had agreed to give one of us the basement. Even though the cupboard, where Harry was, had a proper bed, I was glad to be here seeing as it was much larger. I picked up the phone I had nicked of that cow, Dudley, and texted Harry who had taken Dudley's iPad after much persuasion. Dudley had just assumed he'd lost both of them and Vernon had bought him others straight away.
'You up?'
'I am now'
'Whoops, sorry'
'Petunia's calling us'
'Be there in a sec'
I hid the iPhone under my mattress and dragged myself out of bed. It wasn't unusual for Petunia to be calling us at this hour, it was always to make breakfast or do the laundry. Today was no different.
As me and Harry cooked the bacon, we heard Dudley storm downstairs. It was his birthday. We were going to stay at Mrs Figg's as usual. She always gave us cake, though it was stale, it was still better than being at the Dursleys' so me and Harry were quite looking forward to it.
The phone rang. Petunia went over to answer, she kept nodding her head and answering politely though the expression on her face was anything but polite. The second she had hung up, and after double-checking that she had actually hung up, Petunia began raging about how Mrs Figg had broken her leg. "What about what's-her-name, your friend — Yvonne?" Vernon suggested. I liked Yvonne. So did Harry. I could tell just by looking at him. His face had lighted up and he was now smiling. "On vacation in Majorca," muttered Petunia. Our faces fell again. "You could just leave us here," Harry put in hopefully. I nodded. No answer. Rolling my eyes, I zoned out.
Not long later, I found myself walking to the car. I was rather excited seeing as me and Harry barely ever stepped out of the house. "I'm warning you," Vernon was now saying, putting his large purple finger right up close to mine and Harry's faces, "I'm warning you now — any funny business, anything at all— and you'll be locked up from now until Christmas." When he had gone and sat down, I stuck my finger in Harry's face and mimicked Vernon. We both erupted into laughter and were still laughing as we climbed into the car much to the Dursleys' annoyance. That cow's friend, Piers Polkiss, whom I like to call a rat was to meet us at the zoo.
So far it had been a good day. At lunch, Dudley complained that his and Piers's burgers weren't big enough so me and Harry got those while the cow and the rat got new ones. In the reptile house, Dudley and Piers knocked on the glass, angering me into yelling, "he's sleeping, you blithering idiots!" and earning me a glare from Vernon. He couldn't do much more seeing as we were in public. Me and Harry stood admiring the snake while the others went and looked at the other creatures. Rather awkwardly, Harry said, "Hello" to the snake. I stared at him then laughing, I spluttered that the snake wasn't going to reply. Completely against what I had just said, the snake sat up and replied with a simple hi. Me and Harry gaped at each other. "You can speak to humans?" I managed to say. The snake shook it's head, "Not normally, no, you're the first." Harry had now gotten over the initial fact that the snake could talk and wanted to find out as much as he could. Looking at the habitat plate, Harry asked, "You were born in Brazil?" The snake shook its head. Reading the 'bred in captivity' bit and laughing at my own joke, I said, "That's us too." Dudley came over just then and said (rather loudly may I add) "Piers come look, these two lunatics are talking to the snake." Still snickering, Dudley pressed his face against the glass to get a closer look. Yet, it was no longer there. Dudley had fallen into the shallow water next to the snake. The glass was all but gone.
