You had been invited over to your next-door neighbors' house which was not uncommon. It is where you spent a good portion of your childhood with your best friend, though, you were not invited by him, but his mother. When she called you over for tea, there was a slight sense of urgency in her voice. Not knowing entirely what was going on, you rushed next door as you had promised your friend to keep her company while he was completing his military service.
Approaching the front door, she opened it to invite you in with a big hug. Your second mother then shuffled you over to the sitting room where she had placed some mugs with your favorite tea already prepared for you. As you both sat down on the oversized armchairs, you gently picked up your mug and asked,
"What was the rush in having me here?" You looked at her quizzically over the brim of your mug as the warm liquid hit your tongue.
"Oh," She lifted her mug to her lips, "I was just lonely. I needed some time with my lovely daughter." She grinned at the title, "I also invited your mother over, she just ran to the bathroom for a moment." a slight smirk arose which was quickly followed by a long sip of tea.
"I was wondering where she had taken off to earlier." You chuckled, not entirely convinced with her excuse.
Soon after, your mother popped out from the adjacent hall to greet you with a smile and wave.
"I see you made it over sweetie." She takes the seat beside you and retrieves her mug from the coffee table.
You greet her with a smile and tip your mug back to finish the last swig of your tea. While the mothers begin with the idle chatter you assumed they had been on about prior to your arrival, you fidget with your empty mug as you recall fondly some memories that you had built in this house with your best friend. The times the two of you would run around the house playing hide and seek or heroes. The memory of you switching who plays the damsel caused your smile to spread.
After a few minutes, the moms shuffle around and head to the kitchen. Your mom peeks her head back around the corner and motions for you to follow. Gathering your empty mug, you tag along behind them.
The women continue their chattering as they search around the kitchen for something, what that thing is though you have no idea. You take it upon yourself to wash out the mugs that were used and set them out to dry. Your friend's mother interrupts your mother mid-sentence to check her phone and quickly shows her the screen. The two begin giggling excitedly, in a way that reminded you of middle school girls talking about boys. You shoot them a skeptical look but brush it off soon after.
"Y/n dear, I just got a notification that an amazon package I ordered is here. Would you mind grabbing it off the porch for me?" Your friend's mom requests.
You nod in response and make your way to the front door.
Opening the front door, you look around for the package you were sent to retrieve but are met with the same grey slab and entrance rug as always with no package to be seen. You step outside and turn to face the door to see if it somehow evaded your sight but cross your arms to still be met with nothing.
"I believe this is the package you were sent to find Sunshine."
You nearly give yourself whiplash turning around to see those precious baby blues paired with a massive toothy grin that you had not seen in two excruciatingly long years.
"Mirio! Oh my goodness, you're still alive!" You run hurtling towards his open arms and slam into his chest for a bear hug.
"Nice to know I'm still wanted here Y/n. I missed you like hell!" The camo-clad man says as you both toddle around in a mess of arms and happiness.
