Hey- I'm Jade Kalokairi. I'm not really an "author's note" kind of writer, so just enjoy my writing. I ask questions for every chapter, so remember to comment! Thanks!
Prologue (The story is told by Indigo, the MC- unless written otherwise)
I was fifteen when I died for the first time.
It wasn't traumatic and I didn't blame anyone. It happened, it hurt, and I survived. People seemed to forget that last part. To them, I may as well have died that day. It was the most important I'd ever be in the small town of Bridgewood.
I don't remember much. The memories faded over time as any childhood incident would. Dolly had been so excited for us to go to visit the Lake, the invitation-only hangout for the most popular kids at our high school.
I'd only ever heard good things about the Lake. When Dolly's long-time crush handed us both our special admittance bracelets, we could hardly believe it. The Lake resided on the outskirts of town and it wasn't particularly appealing in any way. The water was more green than blue and there'd been plenty of news articles about the "dangerous chemicals" in the water, but it was all we had in Bridgewood. It wasn't even a lake; just a portion of the river that was cut off by an artificial waterfall.
Anyone could swim in the river. Families crowded during the summer with their fishing hooks and floaties, while most teenagers scattered themselves to sunbathe along the riverbanks. Dolly and I used to love swimming on the banks; there was something about the soft current and silence that soothed us both. That was over the moment we got our yellow rubber bracelets.
We were the only freshmen to be invited that year, and perhaps that should have been the first red flag. The second was that we were the only new female invites. But even the NO SWIMMING signs we passed on the way looked inviting to fifteen-year-old Dolly who thought she was in love.
I never blamed Dolly for what happened that day after school. It wasn't her fault that I ripped my bathing suit and had to sew it back quickly. She never made me take that drink from Sam, the cute senior in my AP calculus class. She wasn't there to stop me from joining Sam at the top of the tree with the swinging rope and Dolly certainly didn't see when Sam pushed me.
Dolly also wasn't the one to call the police when I stopped breathing.
No QOTC this time because you haven't met most of the characters yet! Thoughts on the writing so far?
