ellie was at home whilst pete was working on a house,
"keep your end straight will you?"

"you're overthinking it bro, none of my kids were planned."

they pushed the carpet across the floor, unraveling it,
"kid shows up, you figure it out, easy - peasy."

"how many kids you got now, stu?"

"number four's in the oven right now dude."

"wow."

"nothing hard about kids, as long as you spend some time with them, they're cool."
"most important thing, make sure the moms all get along."

pete drove into the driveway and as he walked in his dog meatball greeted him in a friendly way as he gave him a scratch in the ear.

"hey, you miss me? oh! that's my boy."
"you missed me, huh? i missed you too!"
"yeah, you're such a good boy."
"hey, el! i got the reel samples you wanted for the kitchen."

ellie was sat down at the dining table sniffling at her computer screen with a red nose and red eyes wearing earphones.

"el, you okay?" pete asked after not getting a response.

he walked in towards her, "hey, what's the matter?"

she finally realised he was there and wiped her nose as she took out her earphones and looked away from the screen.
"nothing, i was just thinking about what you said, about adopting a five year old."

"i said that?"

"yeah."

"i was totally - i was joking."

"i know, it's kind of crazy, but it just got me thinking, and there's so many kids in foster care and they're moving from place to place and they don't have anybody, and it's like the saddest thing i've ever seen, and i found this adoption agency and they're having an orientation next week." ellie explained, showing pete the computer screen and website.

"no, no, no, no, no, don't show me that, i don't wanna see those little faces, you trying to break my heart? i just got home from work." pete said as he shut the laptop.
"ellie, people who take in foster kids are really special, these are the kind who volunteer when it's not even a holiday, like we don't even volunteer on a holiday."

"what if, there was like, a disaster?"

"what, like a dirty bomb?"

"whatever, and like there's a little kid who ends up on our doorstep and we're gonna turn her away 'cause we're not special enough'?"

"that would depend, i mean there's a lot of factors that go into it, i mean, our food rations, the blast radius." pete continued as ellie slowly nodded her head and walked past him.
"el, you can't take some off handed remark i made and turn it into a crazy life decision, it was a joke."

ellie turned and faced him, "yeah."
"i know, i just..." she looked to the side with a slight sad look on her face before continuing,
"you're right, you shouldn't be pushed into something that you don't wanna do, it was just a nice thought."
there was a couple seconds of silence,
"good night." she gave pete a kiss,

"all right i won't make any more jokes like that."

ellie let go and walked towards the bedroom.

"all right?" pete sighed.
he picked up his bag of spicy nachos and began to walk to the tv, "hey you wanna watch a little fixer upper?"

ellie didn't answer.

clearly that was a no.

"okay, love you."
"i love you." ellie replied.

pete went and sat down and turned on the tv, for a couple of seconds before he turned it off again.
he checked down the hall to see if Ellie was nearby to see him and he quickly walked to the laptop. He opened it and had a look at the website ellie had talked about and shown him.
he looked at all the cute little faces of the foster kids on the website with no real place to call home without being put back in the system,
"oh god."

so many kids.
they each had a description of what parents they would like and what their interests are.
pete scrolled through so many kids he couldn't keep count that he didn't even realise ellie was standing right there with a smile.
pete's mouth hung open and it was as if tears had started to from in his eyes.
he looked down at the table and shook his head,
"it's not fair, that is not..."
he could feel the presence of someone so he swiftly looked to his right and saw ellie stood there smirking.
"hey." "you can't buy these pita chips anymore, they're way too spicy, i'm getting my nose watery and-"
he stopped talking after ellie came and kissed him then hugged him tightly.
