One shaky aspect of Louis and Will's relationship, once it got off the ground, (and that takeoff took a long time. Seriously, that runway was fifty miles long), was the development of pet-names.
Louis had labeled Will "fanboy" since day one and that wasn't changing anytime soon. It was effective. Will answered when it was said and Louis could use the name in different flavors. A sour, drawn out mumble when he tired of the Star Trek jokes. A vanilla and whiskey growl when he wanted Will's attention. A salty, sharp-spiced flick of the tongue when he was near... well, use your imagination.
Will picking a name for Louis was a bit harder. "You bastard" wasn't usually appropriate for office use. Nor was "love" since it seemed too obvious. "Blondie" had too many past connotations to one very disturbed sonofabitch that they both wanted dead.
But one morning, when they both had come in late, Will had been brave, and devious, enough to try a few.
"Hey, Will, can you get that file from storage?" said Louis.
"Sure, hun."
Louis accepted and ignored the name without a further word until Will came back.
"Thanks, fanboy."
"No problem, honey."
Honey? That made Louis pause. Like he was the honey in Will's tea? Okay, he could deal with that as a test of endearment, considering how often he had been slurped down like tea. But... honey? Really? Fake-beach blonde house spouses called people "honey".
When they both decided to sign out for lunch that the names took a turn.
"Want sandwiches from the side deli?" asked Louis as they passed security and walked out into the building's lobby.
"Only if I can get the drinks," said Will.
"Deal, meet you back here in five?"
"Got it, honey bun."
Louis stood third in line at the deli when the pet-name and the connotations hit him like the hot waffle iron toasting the paninis. A hot blush crept up his sides and stained his cheeks as he told the teen behind the counter his order and counted out the exact change. He had never been so glad for the shades he wore, no one had to see the heated look in his eyes.
The cheek burning memory stayed with him as he until he parked himself at a table and Will came back juggling two cups and a paper bag that wafted sugar.
"I made sure the sweetener wasn't zero calorie," said Will set the coffee next to Louis and the tea on the other side of the table. "Rachel wants you to up your calorie intake again."
"Honey bun?" Louis asked in a strangled voice.
Will grinned, his nose crinkling.
