Waking up to the glass shattering sounds of bombs and the smell of gun powder filling up your noses, as you try to get the last of your morning sleep trying to dodge the sun peaking through the blinds on which the dust has adhered seems to have become the routine of the people of Holmes, Chapel in 1950's ever since the World War II destroyed their perfect lives leaving behind just rubbles of broken homes and families that were torn up. They are moving on, trying to find a way to distract themselves from the grief and amidst all of this, there is Aaliyah, holding onto every last piece of hope and love she can find, trying to soak up all there is about life because she knows she doesn't have much time.
As she rose from under the torn blankets that kept her warm through the chilly nights, she looked at her skinny feet and her nails that she freshly painted just last night shining bright in the sunlight that managed to fill up her room. Skinny feet. She hated it, not because she thought they looked ugly but because everyone else assumed it was. But all of it gets lost as they all try to keep up with those very skinny feet that run along the edges of the stage, so fast and so gracefully that they miss it, dazed by the beauty of how it sways and swifts by, showing the most amazing dance moves.
She finally gets to moving when the sweet smell of tea being made by her best friend, Jenny in the kitchen overpowers the faint whiff of gun powder coming from outside her window. Hovering behind Jenny to get a hold of a fresh cup early in the morning, she gives her a chaste kiss on the cheek as she murmurs "g'mornin". Jenny just laughs and hands her a hot piping cup of tea as she sits by the rickety table watching over some girl with pigtails crying her heart out in an old movie playing on the television.
"You should get out", declared Jenny suddenly.
"What?"
"Oh, I meant you should go see some place pleasing, to take your mind off of things... it's been almost over a week since you went out anyplace", worried Jenny.
"Are you watching me all the time, love?", laughed Aaliyah as she emptied her cup.
Jenny rolled her eyes and asked, "Would you like to join us few girls from down the lane for some pint and dancing at the bar tonight? One of their best singers is coming down tonight, never saw that bloke but he knows how to steal everyone's hearts, but that's just hearsay... what was his name again?"
"Harry Styles", said Aaliyah quietly and left the room.
"So are you coming tonight?", shouted Jenny but she never got an answer back.

Aaliyah sat in front of her mirror as she dolled herself up in her favorite red skirt with the white polka dots that fell just right below her knees and the caramel colored sweater with the V-neck that revealed enough to make the men lingering around while their girlfriends gave a scornful eye, hoping it would have been them but never to give her a shabby cheap look.
Donning her lips a bright pink color and wearing her fancy high heels that she just brought last months, she looks up to see Jenny standing at the door with a smile waiting for her.
As they make their way to the rusty taxi with an old driver slacking on the torn leather seat blowing a cigar in his mouth, she turns around to look at a little girl laughing her heart out as she walks holding a dripping ice-cream in one hand and another hand clutched tightly to her mummy's finger. The little girl's happiness makes Aaliyah so jealous that she almost wants to snatch away and drop the ice-cream on the puddle forming beside them just to watch the smile wash away from that little girl's face. Aaliyah is hurt, she feels guilty of letting even a thought of hurting someone cloud her mind but mostly she is hurt and jealous for what she couldn't have. She has always been like this. The one who got rejected from everyone when all she wanted was love and care.
