A Beautiful Distraction

There she was again, hovering a foot over my body. A beautiful woman in white with long raven hair and soft lips spread in a maniac smile that visits me at night. Sometimes I wish she would go away, but my conscious knows that I enjoy seeing her.

A loud ringing started to change the dream. I quickly realized that it was my alarm clock on its 3 round.

"Shit." I cursed as I read the clock, 9:43 AM. I quickly got out of bed and ran to my dresser to get my clothes on. I worked at a little coffee shop a few blocks down where I had the morning shift at 10:00 AM. My small cat, Michi, made circles around my feet, meowing to remind me that she was also quite hungry. Why is life so stressful, all of these responsibilities, I thought to myself.

As I quickly ran to the shop, I passed the little garden that always loved to greet me. I had never been to the garden however because I was always running late. Tomorrow I'll visit you, I said to myself, although I told myself this every day when I passed the garden.

When I arrived at the coffee shop, my boss did not look happy. "You're late again Ophelia." He sounded annoyed.

"I know, I know. Hey I'm trying here, Lin." I defended myself.

"Are you having those dreams again?" He asked, a little more concerned. The room froze for a moment and seemed to swallow me whole as I processed the question.

"Eh, so what if I am," I ignored him, using my witty sense of humor to hide away my fears, "just tell me what I need to be working on."

He faltered for a second, but eventually gave in because he didn't want to argue, "Cash register."

"Thank you." I said sarcastically and got myself situated at the register.

The day went on, and I couldn't stop thinking about that girl. Why does she keep intruding in my dreams? I questioned. Every night for the past two weeks, I had a recurring dream of a girl hovering over me, smiling like a maniac. She just stayed there, and I was paralyzed. The thing is, I didn't want her to stop. She hypnotized me in a way where I found myself craving her presence. Her black hair, her dusted freckles, her pink lips...

"Hello?" an annoyed voice called me back to reality, "are you going to take my order?" A middle-aged white woman fussed.

"Yeah, okay." I droned. My manager gave me a look and called me over to him after the woman left.

"I think you should go home early today, you seem kind of out of it."

"Pfft, I'm fine-"

"Ophelia..." he looked genuinely concerned and I didn't want to trouble him, so I stopped arguing and went home.

I caught the bus ride straight to my place and immediately fell asleep on the vehicle.

All of the sudden, in my land of dreams, the lights went out. The windows fogged up and time stopped as the door started to shake violently and blew open. The woman in white pranced through the bus, her long black hair flowing behind her, a smile spread across her face as she neared me. I couldn't move. I couldn't cry for help, because everyone else on the bus disappeared. All I could do was watch and stare, paralyzed, as she neared closer, and closer, until her cold hands held my face gently.

"I'll have you soon." she cooed in a rather sweet voice, but her eyes gave me a different message. They cried for help. Her hands left my face and the bus went back to normal. I must have fallen asleep, I thought to myself. That dream was unlike the others. Most of the time she just hovered above me smiling with her hair drooping on my shoulders. This was way different.
