Chapter Three

I stand just inside the doors of the schoolhouse and I look to my left and I see the sign 'The Jack Thornton School'. I close my eyes just to remember everything that has happened in this school. All the wonderful memories of Jack. I reach out my hand and touch the sign and remember how Jack built this school for me to teach, instead of the saloon and how we got married here. "Oh Jack, how I miss you so much!"

I hear the children coming towards the school and I opened the doors, as the class is about to start. The kids come towards the stairs as I rattle the cowbell to let them know schools about to begin.

"Good morning everyone!" I say with a huge smile on my face. I absolutely love to teach, and the children just make it so easy to want to teach them. I could not imagine my life without teaching in Hope Valley. I welcome the children one by one into the schoolhouse, each by name.

I can see in the distance Lucas walking with Jesse towards a project that he is working on for the gas station. Mr. Canfields is new to Hope Valley, who is settling with his lovely wife Minnie and 2 children Angela and Cooper. Lee has been trying to help Lucas the last few days, as per the conversation I had with Rosemary. I cannot help but stare and smile and wish that things were different. He might have walked me to the Schoolhouse before starting his day at work. I have not had the chance to talk to Lucas since that situation a few weeks back. Seems as though he avoids me, and he has been really occupied now with the oil business as Henry has been trying to get better with his health.

"Alright children!" I say as I walk back into the classroom and close the doors. "Some of you may have gotten to know our newest students, Angela and Cooper. I would like you all to give them a warm welcome." I look at the children and they quietly give their welcome and wave over at the children.

Opal is sitting right next to Cooper and whispers to him. "You don't have to be scared. I can help you and I have Brownie who can cheer you up and make things better."

"Let's start today off with talking about your stories of who you admire most in Hope Valley," I say as I go to sit at my desk. "Angela and Cooper, I know today is your first day with us, but you are more than welcome to participate with us if you would like. Alright, who would like to start us off?"

The school day went by very quickly. The children all seemed to get along with Angela and Cooper. Everyone was engaged in our lesson and we reviewed a few mathematical equations that we had discussed the week before. The stories of who our children admire most were engaging as some talked about Lee, Dr. Shepherd, Bill, Lucas, Kevin, Nathan, Fiona, and a few others. Of course, they did not forget to mention Rosemary and how she is so very talented in the arts. They admire me as a teacher as well and that warmed my heart.

"All right class. I want you all to go home and think about tomorrow's assignment. I will be pairing you all up and we will be talking about the weather and how it changes." I got up and walked towards the doors to open them to let the children out. I walk out and go down the stairs to say goodbye to all the children. As I am standing there, Nathan comes by to pick up Allie.

"Good Afternoon Elizabeth. How are you?" He said with a huge smile.

"Hello. I'm doing well thank you and yourself?" I reply as children pass by and gather to play after school.

"I'm good thanks. I was thinking" He said holding his Mountie hat but was quickly stopped.

"Uncle Nathan." Says Allie as she runs down the steps to her uncle. "I've made some new friends today in school. I told Angela all about the watering hole and she would love to join us one day." Allie said all happy.

"Angela is one of the Canfields children. That would be really nice of you Allie to invite them." I said happily as it made me feel content knowing that the children all got along.
