Tough Luck

Him.

7:02 in the morning. The light breeze blowing against my face helps wake me up for the day.
I walk through the familiar doors of the rink as I continue to the change rooms to get ready for my morning session. I am immediately blocked by the many people crowded around something or someone.
"Why is there so many people here?" I ask, but am unanswered, for I am drowned out by the others chattering around me.
"Lily!" I hear someone shout from the other side of the crowd. I make my way, pushing and shoving to get through to the voice who had called me.
"Nam! Why are all these people here at 7:00 in the morning?" I asked confused
" The Japanese skater Yuzuru Hanyu has arrived yesterday and all the skaters want to meet him today."
"Oh... But seriously 7 in the morning - so annoying" I say as I roll my eyes. I don't understand why everyone is making a big deal out of this guy. Yah sure he is a good skater, but I bet Javi can skate as well as him. Trying to keep my composure, I continue on to the change rooms to get my skates on.
" Hey,wait! Where are you going?" Nam shouts
"I'm going skating, that's what I came here to do. Not to fantasize over some foreign figure skater." And with that I ran to the change room.

I stroke around the rink, listening to the crunch of the ice below my skates. I glide, feel my edges and practise some of my footwork. As I go around the ice minding my own business - I notice that the voices of the crowd had gone quiet. Curious, I look up to see that coach Orser was talking to them and behind was a skinny silhouette. "Yuzuru Hanyu..." I mumbled under my breath. As I continue to skate, I observe the new skater, due to not paying attention, I trip on my toe pick and belly flop onto the cold surface.
THUMP!
"Ugh." I sit there embarrassed , not wanting to move from my position on the ice.
The crowd of skaters turn their heads to my direction to see what has happened, then continue listening to whatever coach was lecturing them about. Except for one pair of eyes. They stay trained on me, with no facial expression. "Why is he staring at me? So weird..." , I give him a questioning look and once again continue to skate around.
"Fine, if he wants to stare at me I'll give him something to stare at."
I quickly skate around and try a few double flips and triple flip walkthroughs before actually attempting the jump.
"Here goes nothing..."
Inside edge, inside edge, knee bend, pick... Land. Land?
"I.. I did it!" I say to myself as I hold my landing position.
" I really did it!" I squeal with excitement and start to jump up and down with excitement. I probably made a big scene and had a goofy grin on my face, but I couldn't care less.
But my celebration is cut short when coach calls me over.
"Brian, did you see my triple flip I finally landed it!" Is the first thing I tell him when I approach him.
" Uhm, well... not quite. While you were jumping, I was Introducing our new skater to the others."
"Oh..." Is all I can say. I CAN'T BELIEVE HE MISSED MY TRIPLE FLIP BECAUSE OF THE NEW SKATER!
" Well, it doesn't matter if I had seen it or not, at least you know you have the capability of landing it, good job!" He tries to say in the most optimistic tone.
"Thanks..." I mumble clearly unhappy due to the situation.
Coach continues on,
" Anyways, I called you here, to introduce you to the newest member of the Orser team. His name is Yuzuru Hanyu. I would really appreciate it if you help him feel welcome here".
The new skater introduces himself,
"Hello, my name is Yuzuru Hanyu" His japanese accent is thick and he uses broken English but it is still understandable.
I nod " Hi, my name is Lily, nice to meet you." I try to say without sounding annoyed.
" No! Her real name is Liliana!" I've heard this annoying voice way too many times.
"Nam could you please stop annoying me!" I yell at him and turn back to the now frightened skater in front of me.
"Sorry Yuzuru, just call me Lily, it's nice meeting you." I try to say happily, but it seems to fail from the look I'm getting from Coach.
" Well, I have got to go introduce Yuzuru to some of the other coaches, Lily continue training, I'll be back in a few minutes. Come with me Yuzuru" Coach says briefly and walks away with Yuzuru tailing him from close behind.
"uhhhh." I sigh out loud. The rink is definitely going to become more interesting.
