After a hour or so of idle talk, it was time for Akira to say goodbye and return back home. He was actually surprised at how long he lasted outside the comfort of his own home; he had never spent so much time at another person's house ever since his grandmother died. Before he went out through the door, it just so happened that Marin had one last thing to tell him.
"Akira-kun?" the girl asked. "Do you see it? In the sky?"
Akira thought that he could have heard the sound of raindrops pattering on the window over the course of their conversation, and that it had stopped only a few minutes ago. Nevertheless, he peered through the curtains, and saw the most wonderful sight! The dazzling gleam of it in the sky! The majestic hue of colours! Oh, what a wonderful rainbow!
"That's us. Such a pretty sight, don't you think?" Marin exclaimed.
"Yeah." Akira muttered under his breath.
"I like it when rainbows appear. They just look... so beautiful."
"Eh... I never thought I'd get to see a rainbow in my life. It is beautiful, just like you. Thank you. Thank you for showing me that there's still something worth living for in this world."
Marin couldn't help herself. She giggled a bit, out of affection for the young man about to leave.
"My pleasure. See you later, Akira-kun."
A moment's silence rang out, before Akira responded.
"...See you later as well, Marin-chan."
With those words, Akira went out of the front door, remembering to shut it behind him as he left. Once he had taken the first steps back home, he looked up towards the sky.
There it was, still shining as brightly as ever. A reminder that regardless of what happened in the past, there was always a brighter future ahead for him.
For her. For them.
The rainbow.
