This is an *extremely* short fanfic about Sophie's experience when she was 5 after hitting her head and manifesting her telepathy.

It was all kind of a blur.

The strange boy in the distance, who she swore disappeared. The audible crack of her head hitting the pavement after she tried to chase after him. A bloated silhouette calling 911. The concerned cries of her family, the darkness engulfing her. And now, laying on a cold, hard cot in the hospital— who decided to make them so uncomfortable?— with the voices filling Sophie's head.

So. Many. Voices.

Is she gonna be okay? wondered one voice.

She must be freaking out right now, went another.

Luckily, her symptoms don't look too bad, a third voice said.

"STOP!" Sophie announced. She sounded weak in her head, compared to the voices, but it seemed to do the job.

Everyone looked at her.

But the voices didn't stop.

That's when she realized. Nobody was talking.

The voices were coming from in their heads.

"Are you alright?" her mom asked. She exhaled when she realized that the words had come from her mouth— not whatever creepy mind noise she kept hearing.

I'm so glad Sophie's awake.

You kids and your head bangs.

I wonder if she remembers I stole her stuffed animals...

"No," she admitted groggily, "I hear voices."

The doctor, who was hovering over her and as well as her parents, sister, and grumpy neighbor Mr. Forkle— he must've been the one who dialed 911— tentatively felt Sophie's forehead.

She must be so scared.

"Your head is probably just distressed from the fall," she deduced.

But Sophie knew.

It was more than that.

And she had a sinking feeling in her stomach— one that felt almost as painful as her throbbing headache— that she would never be normal again.
