You rocked back and forth, banging your head against the stacked boxes as your mind lost in a dark, hazy maze of memories when you heard a soft, feminine voice singing.

"I remember there was mist

Swirling mist upon a vast, glassy lake."

In your mind, you see two figures up ahead. One of them turned to you. It was a young woman. Beautiful, smiling at you, glowing in a heavenly light.

"There were candles all around

And on the lake, there was a boat."

"Mama ..." You tried reaching out for her ... only for her to erupt into pure white balls of light, flying away up above. "No! Don't leave me ..."

"And in the boat, there was a man."

The other, standing near you, turned around too. "Papa ..." your eyes widened at the sight – at the memory – of the man he used to be, the father he should have stayed as.

"Who was the shape in the shadows?

Who is the face in the mask?"

He turned to you, approached you, and you couldn't move an inch. He bent down to meet your eyes, his crinkled eyes paired well with his warm smile as he playfully ruffled your hair, laughing care free. You reached your hand out to him only for him to pull away from you completely. His stiff posture, his emotionless expression, his back to you as he walked away and faded into obscurity. Frozen in the spot until you thawed out of the memory, out of your haze, as you felt the sting of red hot fury burst out.

"Damn you!" You slammed a fist into the wall at the sharp masculine voice in your head, making the stacked pile tumble down.

"You little prying Pandora!

You little demon!

Is this what you wanted to see?!"

You clutch your head tighter, letting your bag slip through your arms and drop down against the floor, as you collapsed.

"Curse you!

You little lying Delilah!

You little viper!

Now you cannot ever be free!

Damn you!

Curse you!"

Your hands clawed into your scalp, your legs kicked out as you curled in on yourself and your eyes squeezed shut painfully tight as memories flashed in your mind.

"Stranger than you dreamt it

Can you even dare to look

Or bear to think of me

This loathsome gargoyle

Who burns in hell

But secretly

Yearns for heaven

Secretly, secretly."

Petrified faces, disapproving murmurs and whispers, everyone's attention on a deformed, neglected child.

"But ... me ..." You winced at that same pained, powerful voice boomed in your head again.

"Fear can turn to love
