That One Thing

Prologue

Both of my parents grew up with horses, it was kind of a family thing. My dad was raised on a ranch and my mom found a very deep love for horses and horse back riding when she was about 10.

I was born into a family of 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 2 horses. Moggy and marble, daisy, and Belle and Whistle. Whistle was supposedly my horse, for she was more sound (calm and less spooky) than Belle. They were both Mares (fixed female horses) and mares always have their sassyness. But Whistle, she was more of a momma horse to me. Always careful and protective, keeping an eye on me, always protecting me.

She was the oldest horse at the barn, she was 30 when I was born. But, when she was 35, she got terrible pneumonia, it was so bad to the point that she couldn't get up. If she tried to get up she would become so out of breath she would have to lay back down, we tried everything we could but nothing was working. So, at 5 years old, I lost my first horse. My mom told me we had to put her down for her sake and my tiny heart was broken.

Belle then chose me to be her person. She understood how upset I was about Whistle and she helped me, she made me better. Then she became my best friend.

Shortly after Whistle's death, my mom's friend gave her his horse because he couldn't take care of him anymore, and yes, for free. That's when Dusty came into my life. He was such a gentleman, he is the best gelding (castrated male) anyone could ask for, he was trained amazingly well. He isn't pushy, he knows boundaries, he's great with kids, and he absolutely loves his attention. He is about a year older than Belle and a little taller too.

At 14 I was living my best life; finding myself, finding amazing friends, getting riding lessons. I was great, I was ok my entire life. I always hung out with friends, I hung out with my horses, my grades weren't shit, it was all great. It was a great time for me.
