Everything was not fine.
As soon as I got to my dorm I locked myself in my bathroom. I could hear Axl knocking, begging me to come out. Apologizing for his sisters comments. But it wasn't his place to apologize.
A perfectly good evening, ruined by his sister! I honestly couldn't care less about basically being called fat by Izzy. It's the fact that I'm starting to show and I have yet to tell Axl. Or even worse, I have yet to tell Xander, which is the guy who really deserves and needs to know.
I stand in front of the mirror and pull my dress all the way up, exposing my belly. I swear it's gotten bigger since this morning. There's no way I can hide this for much longer. I sigh in frustration and give my dress a hard yank back down, once again covering my tiny, but somehow very noticeable, bump.
"Jane." I hear my name being called from behind the bathroom door. Although Axl is speaking in almost a whispered tone, I'm still startled when he speaks again, "Jane, please come out. I'm honestly so sorry about Izzy. She can be a bit much sometimes, but she was probably just having a hard day."
Is he seriously making excuses for her?
I yank the door open, and see that he has his hand up to knock once more. He smiles when he sees me but that smile quickly disappears when he looks at my face.
Before he can get a word in, I'm going off. "How dare you make excuses for her! I get it, she's your sister, but this isn't the first 'bad day' she's had since I've met her. I'm not a punching bag and I did nothing for her to take her insecurities out on me!" I've never been a confrontational person but tonight, I am a whole new Jane.
I quickly walk over to my dresser and begin rummaging in it for some PJ's to change into. I hear Axl approaching behind me but I don't turn, I keep looking for my PJ's.
"Jane I didn't mean—" he begins but I whirl around to face him so fast, he stumbles back a bit.
"You didn't mean what, Axl? You didn't mean to defend her actions? It's pretty clear you did." I take a deep breath and with it's release I lose all of my fight. "I think you should leave, maybe we can talk tomorrow or something."
This night has come to such a sad end.
"If that's what you want." Axl begins walking to the door and I follow. When we reach the front door he slowly turns around, "I'll text you tomorrow." He leans in to kiss me on the cheek and I don't have the strength to push him away. "Goodnight," he says before disappearing out my front door.
I stand there for a minute before heading back to my dresser and pulling out a pair of sweat pants and an oversized t-shirt. I quickly change, turn the lights off, and crawl under my covers.
For the millionth time since I started college, I begin to cry. This is not supposed to be my freshman year. I should be at that party with Lane having the time of my life.
I eventually cry myself to sleep
***
"Ow, fuck." I hear someone say in the darkness of my room.I open my eyes but I don't sit up. "H-Hello?" I say hesitantly with a groggy voice.
"Sorry. Didn't mean to wake you." The deep voice whispers back. It takes me a minute to realize that Laney must have brought Fin to spend the night. His words are a bit slurred which leads me to think he must be a bit drunk.
"It's okay," I whisper back. I reach over to the night stand to check my phone. 4:51 AM. There's no way I'll be getting back to sleep tonight. I sit up in bed and watch as the shadow of a drunk Fin stumbles his way to the bathroom. I sigh and slowly get out of bed. I look towards Lane's bed and see a lump under the blankets which I can only assume is Lane's body. I quickly change into some warmer clothes and quietly leave my room before Fin has returned from the bathroom.
