...
They were going to find him.
The thought constantly swirled through his mind. A certainty that he couldn't let go of.
They were going to find him.
He hadn't ran far enough. Hadn't ran fast enough. Hadn't done enough to make his scent disappear. Had left too many clues behind where they could be too easily found.
They were going to find him.
But to them, this place didn't even exist.
How wonderful it must be, to pick and choose which parts of your own kingdom you claimed.
That was why he would be safe here. Why he would be able to blend in so easily. Why he could count on the fact that no one would give him away.
Because everyone here hated them as much as he did.
...
Still that fear ran deep. Buried it's self within his mind and heart until it felt as though he were going crazy. Took hold and never let go, no matter how well he manage to hide himself away.
Yet one question continuously made it's self known along side the fear. One thought that he couldn't shake, no matter how desperately he tried.
How was this any better?
How was this any better than what would have been? How was hiding here, unable to even speak his own name, waiting endlessly for someone who might not even come, any better than the life that was being offered?
Because he hated what they were. Hated what they had become. Hated he thought of becoming one of them. It made him feel dizzy and sick to his stomach. Made him feel angry and bitter.
All of it made him feel angry and bitter.
...
The plan had been simple.
Disappear into the night. It was the one trick they hadn't tried. No, before they always thought it would be best for him to slip away under the bright rays of sunlight. After all, it wasn't as if anyone could follow him.
But someone always did. Because what he failed to realize was humans were nothing more then a dispensable asset to them. Wrapped so tightly around their fingers that they would do anything they were commanded.
So he was always caught. Always drug back to where he supposedly belonged.
Yet this time had been different. Because he had disappeared right beneath this noses. Had slipped out during some moment when all of them had occupied and unsuspecting. Had actually made it past the outer stone walls.
Had actually made it out. Had rode for literal hours before he stumbled across this place. This tiny little fairy tale village that the world had willingly forgotten.
It was he furthest he had ever gotten. The furthest he would ever get.
His only mistake was waiting too long for a promise that would never come true.
...
The world was cruel and the land was barren and fairy tales didn't exist.
Neither did luck, because his was constantly running out.
...
"No!" It came out as a harsh scream, body thrashing as he fought against the strong arms that tried to hold him still. That tried to lift him from the pile of blankets he had been given. "Let go of me! Leave me be!"
