"for the next couple of weeks, we'll be working on a project focusing on biology, study of life. i'll be placing you into pairs today so you can work with one of your classmates."
ah yes, science projects. wonwoo never really cared much for them, but now that he likes dahyun and she's fortunately in his science class, things are a bit more brighter for him. whenever he hears "pairs" or "groups", wonwoo immediately hopes that dahyun will be placed with him.
he waits patiently—also excitedly, but he can't let that show—until he hears his name. "jeon wonwoo and kim dahyun."
wonwoo almost dies. pretty sure a little part inside of him does, actually. not out of despair though; out of pure excitement. he gets to work on the biology project with his crush. there's not a more cliche fanfiction scenario than this.
"so, everyone is paired now. let's take the rest of class to start working on the project in your pair." the teacher announces, everyone moving to sit in a desk by their partner or scooting their desks over. dahyun only sits a desk away from wonwoo, so she moves to sit next to him.
"isn't it coincidental we got paired together?" dahyun giggles while opening her science textbook. "yeah, it's pretty comedic." wonwoo agrees. dahyun gets to desired page in her textbook before pointing at a passage. "so, we're focusing on this for the first part of the project. we can meet up at my house if we want to work outside of school."
"okay." wonwoo says. he actually might be able to go to dahyun's house. he watches carefully as dahyun writes down her address on a piece of paper, tearing it off and giving it to him afterwards. "you free anytime this week? if not, we can schedule a study day next week."
"um, i'm free...today?" wonwoo thinks for a second, trying to recall any possible events happening after school. "yeah, i'm free today. if that's okay with you."
"that's perfect! you can walk home with me after school and study at my house. then we can plan our next study day."
this news extremely brightens wonwoo's mood. unfortunately, their science class is second period, so that means around five more hours of stupid school before the exciting events happen. four more hours of agonizing waiting.
at lunch, wonwoo tells jihoon the good news. "hey, i told you! you're slowly stepping towards your goal!" jihoon exclaims, patting wonwoo on the back. "all thanks to your personal love expert, lee jihoon."
"oh, stop giving yourself credit." wonwoo groans. he rolls his eyes when jihoon says, "well, it's true i'm the mastermind behind all this. was i not your first push?"
"whatever." he says, grabbing his lunch pail and walking away from his best friend.
two hours later
"this is my house right here." dahyun says, pointing at the house in front of them. it has a very simple-looking exterior. the interior is decorated simply as well, shelves on walls that hold family pictures and meaningful trinkets wonwoo doesn't know the backstory to.
"i'm home, mom!" dahyun calls once she closes the door behind her. "i brought a school friend too, we're going to be studying in the dining room!"
"okay honey! have fun and study hard!" wonwoo hears, assuming the voice to belong to dahyun's mother. dahyun then leads them into a small dining room and to the table so they can settle down and study. dahyun sits at the edge seat of the table so wonwoo sits on her right, taking out his textbooks from his backpack.
"how long do you plan on staying?" dahyun asks, looking at wonwoo. "well, i was planning on texting my parents to see how long they'd be okay with. and to notify them i'm at a friend's house and not dead or something." they laugh at this, wonwoo taking out his phone to do as said.
after texting his parents, dahyun and wonwoo get right to work. wonwoo learns that dahyun is WAY better at science than he is—when he compliments her about it, she tells him, "oh, my genius friend tsuyu provided me her knowledge. don't be fooled though, she's a total crackhead when it doesn't come to homework."
after working for around two hours(only stopping to find a snack, go to the bathroom, or get a cup of water), wonwoo hears the front door open and close. someone's home; maybe dahyun's father?
"ma, i'm home!" a male voice calls, announcing he's arrived from wherever he's been. "hey my gyubear! off with your friends again?"
"yes, sorry if i came home a bit late. what's for dinner?"
"just some leftover beef we can use in lettuce wraps and some kimchi. i'm putting it together right now, should be done soon!"
wonwoo listens to the conversation going on in the kitchen while dahyun goes on about biology, explaining something wonwoo isn't paying attention to at the moment. when he hears footsteps nearing the dining room though, his attention shifts back to dahyun hurriedly.
"hey dahdah." the same male voice says blandly, walking past the dining table without sparing dahyun and wonwoo a glance. "so this page will be about plant life—hey gyu—, so for the next couple of study session we should focus on so." wonwoo decides to just brush off the boy that walked passed them, but that quickly changes when he sees the boy stop in his tracks and turn around in his peripheral vision.
"well would you look at that!" the boy laughs, voice suddenly filled with enthusiasm, "dahyun brought home a stray kitten."
dahyun stops talking to look at the boy. wonwoo does a couple seconds after no one talks, and when he looks at the boy, he can't believe what he sees. yeah sure, he was irritated when the boy, "gyubear", called him a stray kitten, but he got even more irritated when he looked up and saw kim mingyu's the one who said it.
"did you just call jeon wonwoo a stray kitten?" dahyun says in disgust, looking at mingyu with furrowed eyebrows.
"for your information, i'm a fully-matured CAT that can scratch your face off. wanna try anything else?"
wonwoo dearly wishes he could just blurt that out at mingyu. sadly, he can't, because dahyun and her mother are in the same house with them. it's never a good idea to show your burning hatred for someone's son when that someone's around. he wants to be on dahyun's mother's good side if he is to ever date her daughter. wonwoo also dearly wishes dahyun didn't say his full name. now kim mingyu knows who he is, and that isn't a good thing.
"well, nice to meet you, jeon wonwoo." mingyu smiles unpleasantly. "i'm-"
"i know who you are." wonwoo growls, giving mingyu a death glare that makes him shut up. "you should." is the only thing mingyu says before turning on his heel and walking into his room.
"woah, that was pretty good." dahyun gasps, looking at wonwoo with wide eyes. "what?"
"the way you just brushed my brother off. no one has the guts to do that. you know how he is!" dahyun squeals. "kids! time for dinner!" dahyun's mom shouts, making wonwoo's eyes widen. "i should probably go now then. i don't want to get in the way of your family dinner." he mumbles, going to pack up his bags until dahyun and her mom stop him.
"no, you can stay! we'd be happy to have you. what's your name, young man?" mrs. kim smiles, ushering wonwoo back to his seat. "i'm jeon wonwoo."
"nice to meet you! i made beef lettuce wraps for tonight, but if you're a picky eater i can always dish up something else of your liking." mrs. kim brings a plate of lettuce and beef out, setting it on the table and going to get the kimchi. "i actually love beef lettuce wraps, thank you very much though mrs. kim!" wonwoo looks to his right and spots mingyu, who came out of his room and sat down two seats away from dahyun. they accidentally lock eyes for a second, making wonwoo look away as quickly as he can.
all four of them eat dinner in peace, dahyun's mother striking up conversation every now and then just to get the kids talking. wonwoo strayed away from anything that had to do with kim mingyu, not wanting to talk to or acknowledge the junior.
"well, thank you for the meal tonight mrs. kim. i should be going now, it's getting late and my parents might start worrying." wonwoo stands up from his seat, giving the kim family a deep bow before dahyun helps him pack his backpack and sees him out. "next study day is next wednesday, don't forget it! see you then!" dahyun waves to wonwoo as he walks away from the kim house. "okay, bye dahyun!"
he walks home and watches the sun set below the horizon, the sky a mix of pinks and oranges. he goes home thinking about his burning hatred for mingyu, dahyun's pretty face, and what a coincidence that they happen to be siblings.
