I gazed out the window into the Colorado morning sky, capturing the beauty of the trees caked with snow, loving the way the snow sparkled underneath the sun. I stare in awe at the beautiful scenery before me, admiring the winter wonderland on the other side of the cold glass window. A feeling of deja vú washes over me as I hear a loud thump come from above me.
"What the fuck was that?" I gasp, looking around the room out of instinct with my heart pounding in my chest. "Chase?" I call out, "what the hell was that?" No response. Weird, he's never so quiet and reserved like this. I walk to the staircase, lightly trudging up the staircase. I walk down the hall to be met with Chase's door. I knock on the door, jiggling the knob. It's locked. "Chase, what was that noise?" I questioned, expecting him to open the door to reassure me that everything was ok.
"Why is he not answering me?"
I ask myself, confused. "And why is his door locked?" I question, chewing on my thumbnail. "Chase?" I call out once more, a little more louder than the first. I press my ear against the door, listening closely for any noise on the other side. Silence. I get an uneasy feeling. "Chase, open the door." I offer, banging loudly on the door."Chase, open the door please, you're scaring me." I cry out, my palms begin to sweat as I endlessly pound on the door. My hands grip the door knob, twisting it violently, in hopes of the door opening. "Chase, open the goddamn door now!" I shout, banging on the door anxiously. I begin kicking the door, putting as much force into each kick as I could muster, the door rattling with each blow.
Hellbent on proceeding into Chase's room and becoming immensely frustrated with my endless attempts to gain entry in his room, I planted one foot on the ground, gripped the doorframe, and thrusted the other the other with all the strength I could muster up and slammed into the door with a loud grunt, hoping to unhinge the door from its sturdy frame.
The door began to shake, while the center of the door began to bulge with each and every kick. The knob looked as if it would pop off from the door. Dust puffed from the frame which started to separate from the wall. In one swift motion, I thrusted my foot once more with just enough force to send the door toppling over, as it hit the floor with a loud crash.
My eyes began to scan his room. Nothing seemed too out of order, until out of the corner of my eye, I spotted something.I turned my full attention, to find a body. Chase's body. He was sprawled out on the floor by his bed with an empty pill bottle in his hand."Shit!" I rushed over to Chase's side. "Chase? Can you hear me?" I shook him gently. All of a sudden, his once limp pale figure sits up, gripping my exposed shoulders with a painful squeeze. I whimper as his fingernails dig into my skin, drawing blood. His once blank face now sprung to life, sadness and anger written on his face. "WHY, WHY DIDN'T YOU HELP ME JADE? WHY?"
I jolted awake with a gasp as I sit up in my seat, my heart pounded in my chest continuously, the dream replaying vividly in my mind. I groaned as I strained my eyes at the sun's bright rays shining in my face, as my breathing evens out. "Another nightmare Jade?" My mom asks, her eyes glanced up at me in the rear-view mirror as she continued her focused on the road ahead.
My eyes advert to the floor, with a frown plastered on my face. "Sweetie I know, I miss him too." My mother says, visibly still very upset from his passing. I blamed myself for his passing, and I still do. A week or so after he passed was when I started to get the nightmares, consisting of the same thing every night, but it doesn't make it any less scarier. Five months ago. Just five months ago, everything was normal, Chase was still here. We were so happy. Why didn't I try hard enough. Why couldn't I save him? My lip quivers as I let out a heavy sigh, focusing my attention to the ocean to try occupy myself. I watched the beach goers soaked up the summer sun, some swimming, while others sitting on the sand. The surf nazis heading out into the ocean towards a monsterous wave. I face forward in my seat and I'm met with a big beachy sign that says "Welcome to Santa Carla."
