Augustus found himself sitting on a bench, a pack of cigarettes resting to his right. Metaphors. He quickly pulled a single one out of the box and shoved it between his teeth. It felt good. It felt Okay.
Okay. He missed her and their little Okays. He longed for a smile from Hazel Grace Lancaster, for even to just hear her sweet voice. He wanted to cry, to scream her name. But he couldn't. The pain was to condemning, so powerfull it muted him.
"Hey, you gonna light that or not?" A girl suddenly appeared next to him. Her eyes looked like green jewels in the sunlight of this strange place. She too had a cigarette in her mouth. Except it was lit. She pulled it out between her teeth with two fingers and blew out a puff of smoke. It reminded Augustus of a dragon, breathing fire.
He shook his head. "No thanks."
The girl shrugged. "Hmm. Fine." She sighed.
"So where am I ." Augustus asked. The girl turned to him. The cigarette smoke tasted miserable in his mouth. Eww.
"I have no idea." The girl replied. "Just that we're a long ways from Kansas, Dorothy." She held up the lighter, once again. "So let me light it."
Gosh, she was determined.
"Seriously." Augustus defensively replied, putting his hands up. "It's fine."
"Then why do you have a cigarette in your mouth? You're not making sense."
Augustus sighed. This wasn't the first time he'd explained this to a girl. "It's a metaphor." He took the cigarette out of his mouth.
The girl looked irritated, confused.
"Never mind." He stuck it back in.
"Wierd." The girl sighed. She looked up into the unrealistically, bright sky. "And I thought no one could get wierder than Miles Halter." She smirked and laughed a bit, to herself, lit cigarette still in her mouth. Soon after, coughing up a bad case of smoke and ash.
"Who?" Augustus knew he shouldn't have asked. She probably would've ignored his comment, anyways, with the whole smoke in her lungs situation, going on right now. But as soon as the girl finally, and I mean, finally stopped coughing, she started back up with her chattering.
"I'll tell you, right now."
