Before the war, there was peace. You didn't need be at the top of your game every single day just to survive. You could actually relax, settle down if you needed too. I miss my old life. I had so many great friends. Now, all because of Dr. Maxwell, my friends are dead. Dr. Maxwell, a very rich scientist, is the man responsible for this war.

Dr. Maxwell was an American scientist that created the man-eating creatures that now ravage this planet. He called them Maxians. Maxians are nasty creatures that can run at speeds of 50 mph. Far faster than any human on this planet. Not only are they fast, they have incredible strength. These creatures can throw vehicles up to 100 yards if they really tried. Their attitudes are vicious. They'll attack anything and everything. But the one trait that makes them so hard to kill, is their ability to climb walls and on ceilings. They have extraordinary camouflage that adds to the danger of these creatures.

I've been living underground for three years now in a compound, since that seems to be the only safe place to be. My name is Joe, 15 years old. Named after my great-great grandfather, a Vietnam War Veteran. Now I'm at war. But with a much more powerful and aggressive enemy. They say there's an estimated 4.5 billion people dead and missing. Maybe more.

There's about 250 people in the compound. We don't allow anyone to join. My job, guarding the doors. I was ordered to kill on the spot, no questions asked. Human or non-human. Though there hasn't been much activity anyways, except the faint roars of the Maxians. "Hey! Joe! Shifts over, go get some shut eye." I hear my friend Matthew say, as he's walking over to take my shift.

As I turn my AK 47 on safety, I yell "Thanks, Matt. Where were ya an hour ago?" I was just messing around with him, but I don't think he knew that by the way he responded.

"Hey! Be glad I came! Could have left your sorry butt waiting for much longer if I wanted to." He said with an annoyed tone.

"It was a joke. God you're so dramatic! Lighten up a bit would ya?" I said as I was going to the cafeteria.
