Te Fiti's heart was restored, and Maui had been forgiven. Moana's tribe regained their destiny, which was conquering the vast new ocean. She had just returned from a recent voyage into the unknown, and a small number of travelers had disbanded to start a new tribe on an expansive island to the south.
In Motonui, she was about to become chief, after placing not a stone, but a beautiful conch shell on the stack of slabs on the mountain. Her father's hairs were tinged with gray, betraying his passage into old age. She didn't want to lose him like Gramma Tala, but she knew it was as it should be. His tattoo showed a sea turtle, indicating he would be reincarnated as one.
He would be with her, just as Tala had been with her on her great journey across the ocean with Maui, in a manta ray's form. A tear slipped from her eye, and she quickly wiped it away when her father, Tui, came ambling toward her.
"Moana" he said lovingly. "My time as chief is ending. You will take my place as leader tomorrow at sunset."
Moana burst into tears at this.
"What if I'm not ready?" She sobbed worriedly. "Who will lead me when you die?"
Tui gently lifted Moana's chin.
"I will always be with you, just as your grandmother is." He comforted.
This gave Moana strength. She would do her absolute best, just as her father did. The pressure was just so intense; all eyes seemed to be on her, 24/7.
"I delivered a demigod across an ocean and tackled a lava monster." She crowed. "I got this."
"Yes, you do!" With that, Tui walked away to the calling of a fisherman, who had a task for him to solve, as he always managed to do.
Little did they know that a problem was building beneath the peaceful surface of Motonui, as it had just moons before.
