WHAT COULD BRING A man to his knees if not the eyes of the woman he was in love with?

And this particular man was in love with a princess with blue eyes, the shade so brilliant. They were so pretty on her face. She was so pretty.

"You're the best," she said sweetly, throwing her hands around my neck. I buried my head in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply and loving her smell. She smelled like flowers and spring. "I'll never leave you," she promised, her voice soft and loving.

I loved this girl so goddamn much. There wasn't anything I wouldn't do for her.

"I love you," she said.

"And I love you more than you think you know." I kissed her forehead, pushing a lock of her red hair behind her ear. "Take care, okay? I'll see you at yours after basketball practice. Don't forget to type your lab report."

"Yeah, yeah. Got it." She laughed. "Now go."

"Rachel has amnesia?" My best friend, Luke, cackled with laughter, his whole body shaking with it. "What the hell, bro, I thought that shit happened only in the movies."

"You never take me seriously," I muttered under my breath. A little annoyed, I walked faster across the parking lot to my car.

"Of course, I do." Luke hurried to catch up with me, though the playful glint in those hazel eyes still lingered. "I just find it weird. Isn't Rachel in Memphis now?"

"Do you hear from her?"

Luke paused. "Well, not really," he said after a while, casting a nervous glance around the parking lot.

"How do you know she's in Memphis then?" I eyed him suspiciously. If he was in touch with my ex behind my back all this while, that'd just be... weird.

Or maybe I was being an unreasonable ass. Luke and Rachel were friends anyway, and our breakup, no matter how painful it was, shouldn't prevent their friendship from thriving.

"Raine happened to mention it sometime." He shrugged. "But I can't be so sure."

"Okay." Pretending to be unaffected, I unlocked my car and entered, slamming the door shut. Luke watched me from my window.

"I'm heading to practice now," he said. "See you tomorrow."

"Sure, man."

When he left, I revved the car to life and pulled out of the parking lot of NYU, heading to my apartment.

My whole life, I'd loved one girl called Rachel. She'd been my world, my better half. She'd been my everything.

Over the years, I'd tried to move on, to finally accept that Rachel and I were over. She was no longer with me, and I had to accept that. Even if it killed me.
