Chapter 10

Tsukauchi greeted them at the station and ushered them into a small conference room where a young detective was already seated. Tsukauchi poured them all tea and introduced the detective. "Detective Yuki Tanaka, meet Scribe and Eraserhead."

Aizawa shook the young woman's hand cordially. "You're the one who's been in touch with Spinner?"

She nodded. "I established contact with the bartender, let him know I was looking for jobs with the Paranormal Liberation Front. I managed to get a meeting set up with him. I must have done something wrong, though. He knew I was with the police. Seemed to think it was funny until I told him you wanted to meet with him." She turned to Scribe. "That's when he got serious."

Scribe's expression turned grim. "You mean you mentioned my name and he started to take you seriously?"

"Not exactly." The other woman looked at her hands, then back at Scribe. "I mean I mentioned your name and he decided not to kill me."

Scribe's mouth dropped open. Then she closed it and nodded. "Good. You told him that I wanted information?"

Tanaka nodded. "And he said he would meet with you only. Alone. Then he let me go. To deliver the message, I guess."

Scribe shook her head, looking thoughtful. "He could have gotten us the information in several ways. Including by leaving it on your body. He let you go as a gesture of good faith."

Aizawa felt a qualm of misgiving. Scribe was holding something back. He wondered if she'd remembered more about her time in the compound. What was it Shigaraki had said to him? Spinner and Toga are quite taken with the new and improved Scribe. And Spinner had been the one to bring her in and with Shigaraki when he returned her. What else had happened to her that Spinner might know about? What had he witnessed during that time?

"I don't like it." Aizawa said. "I don't trust Spinner."

Scribe sighed. "I know. Me either, but I don't think he'll hurt me. And he may really be able to tell us what Shigaraki did with the girl."

She met his eyes. And he might tell me what's going on with...with Shigaraki.

Do you think he knows? Aizawa shook his head. And I don't think he'd tell you even if he did. He touched her face lightly. Even you have limits to your charms, love.

I'm not going to try to charm him. She gave him a significant look.

Aizawa stiffened. He remembered how she'd played the villain the last time they'd been here, letting him think she was in love with Shigaraki. He wondered if it was even a possibility that Spinner could fall for such a ploy. But Spinner had seen her in the compound with Shigaraki. From what he knew about the man, he was loyal to a fault. Almost to the point of extremism. He might believe no one could resist his boss. If anyone could find out what Shigaraki had planned, it would be Scribe...and Spinner was the perfect target.

He sighed and nodded acceptance. "It's not going to be easy." He took his wife's hand and they turned to the waiting, slightly befuddled police officers. "Let's set it up."

Scribe approached the deserted warehouse with outward confidence, though her inner self cringed a little at what she would have to do. Somehow, she had to convince Spinner she was still in love with Shigaraki. She suspected he'd agreed to meet her because he wanted to see if her loyalty still lay with his boss. If she could convince him she was loyal, he might tell her what was happening with Shigaraki.

And I've got to do this without revealing my real feelings. She couldn't help wondering if she even knew what her real feelings were, though.
