A hand reached out towards mine. I looked to my right, staring into Roman's eyes. The soft orange light of the setting sun lit up his face. I smiled weakly, and looked across the cliff at the warm sky. He smiled too, and I saw from the corner of my eyes that he was still looking at me, as if I was more beautiful than the sunset. We were on top of the City Cliff, and we had been coming here to watch the sun's goodbye ever since we were kids. I sighed and looked at him again. He had never had that look in his eyes, the warm glow that was a cause of love.
I felt my strength crumble. Why did he have to show me that he loved me — today, of all days? I blinked vigorously and blushed. I felt my eyes become wet, so I squeezed Roman's hand and looked at the sunset again. He looked ahead too, and sighed. The sun was falling fast today, just like my confidence. Why am I doing this? I asked myself. There's a kinder way, an easier way. You can do better than this, Anna, you really can.
I let him squeeze my hand again and again while I watched the sun go down like Roman was going to, in a few minutes. The sun threw a hundred colours into the sky and made the whole atmosphere warm. The retreating clouds shone a beautiful orange-pink in the glow and a soft wind blew our worries away.
Well, Roman's worries. Not mine. Even a storm wasn't enough, let alone the Lovers' Wind.
"Anna," Roman whispered, "I have to tell you something." My heart almost stopped beating as I looked as normally as I could at Roman and smiled. "Yes, Roman?" I replied, trying hard not to let my voice quiver when I looked into his deep brown eyes. His sculpted face was lifted in the most heartfelt smile that he had given me in all these years of our friendship.
He truly was handsome.
"I... I don't know how to tell you this, Anna." he said, looking down at the rocky edge of the cliff.
Then please....PLEASE don't.... I thought.
"I...I love you, Anna."
Why...
"I've loved you for a long time now, beautiful," he continued, looking at me again with those loving, caring eyes, "I.... I just haven't been able to tell you...."
Why...
"Anna?"
"Yes?" I replied, looking at our interlocked hands and blushing just a little.
"You won't reject me, will you?"
I looked up at him slowly, and I could feel the last dying rays of the setting sun warming my left cheek. "I...." I wasn't even able to complete the sentence.
I stared into his sparkling eyes. He looked at me expectantly with his mouth slightly open.
I couldn't resist it, and I could tell that he couldn't, either.
So we kissed.
Both of us needed the contact, the exchange of a love so true, words would be unable to describe it.
We kissed.
Long, and with beautiful synchrony — it felt like we were perfect together.
The elation I felt was incredible, inexplicable, and unexpected. I was in heaven in those moments of love, of contact, of...
Truth.
We had never been this close — not only to one another, but to one another's hearts as well. There we sat, in our comfortable bubble of intimacy, wanting to never let go...
But we had to, so we did.
I retreated from our kiss as he did, a little surprised, but just as elated as me. We both smiled and blushed and moved a little closer to each other. As Roman put a hand around me, I said, "No, Roman, I cannot reject you, and I will not."
