Hi my name is Alaska and I am 14 years old, I dropped out of school a few years ago because my mom thought I had depression, she went to go and get me checked out and had discovered that I have Terminal cancer. I tell myself cancer is made out of me, but I guess I really do know that I am made out cancer. I'm not really afraid of it, like it says in one of my favourite books The Fault In Our Stars, "Cancer isn't really a bad guy, it just wants to be there too." I guess it does, it has for a while.
"Mum," Says my brother Timothy, Timo for short.
"Yes Timothy?" Mum prefers Timothy.
"What, exactly are they doing?" Says Timo pointing at the small, square window.
"Ah, um," Says my mum squinting her eyes looking confused.
Behind the window is a couple looking really shaken, almost as if they have seen a ghost.
Next to them is a young boy, bald, has an eye patch with a skull on it. He is pale, a mix between grey and white.
He has an Octonauts onesie on and is playing with a scuba diver toy.
He's wearing a name tag 'Ethan' I'm pretty sure it says.
"They should be moving in, well he should be." Says my doctor, her name is Dr Mell. She is tall-ish, pale, blue eyes almost stale. She has short brown hair long enough not to be called a bob cut.
"Has he got cancer too?" I ask.
"Yeah, poor lil guy. He's only six you know." Dr Mell giggles. "And a half, he corrects me every time."
"I don't blame him, living that extra half year is something to be proud of when you have cancer. What sort?" Says Timo.
"Parden?" Replies Dr Mell. She looks confused.
"What type of cancer?" Says Timo rolling his eyes and tuts once.
"Oh, um, Leukemia."
"Oh, such a shame, he's so young," Says my mum looking down. My mum has long brown hair with ringlets at the bottom.
She is short and wide, almost stubby. But she has the biggest heart. she wears a white top with a black cardigan. She also has jeans and an elephant necklace on.
"We should let you get some rest, okay Alaska?" Says Dr Mell. It's not like I had a choice anyway.
"Okay."
Just before they leave we pray, well they do, only this time I'm too focused on Ethan, how happy he seems. It's amazing.
"See you later, kay," Says Timo. By later he means tomorrow, mainly because tomorrow is a very special day. Well, for me anyway. It's my birthday I turn fifteen. Well technically it's my last day being fifteen, because the day I was born I began living my first year, and the day I turned one I began living my second and so on.
"Kay." I say smiling. Timo and mum leave with Dr Mell. I guess I should try and go to sleep but with the boxes rattling next door and my heart monitor beating in sync with every single one of my heart beats, it's kinda hard to.
About five minutes later there's a knock at the door. I take a few deep breaths.
"Come in," I say taking breaths.
No longer than a moment later a boy walks in. He is tall, brown hair parted to the side turning into a flick twirl thing at the tip, with some blonde highlights. He is tan with freckles on his nose. He has deep set blue eyes with his eyebrows close down to his eyes so his eyelashes touch his eyebrows.
He wears a brown leather jacket with a black top, he also has blue faded jeans with nikes on. He also has flowers.
"Hey," He says. He has a low sexy voice.
"Hello,"
"I'm Liam,"
"Alaska,"
"That's a pretty name, not as pretty as your smile though." He says as he scratches the back of his neck. I'm smiling, I didn't even notice.
"Thanks,"
"No problem. Oh, um these are for you," He says as he holds out the flowers. He walks to the side of my bed and lays them on the desk.
"I'll probably have to get a vase for them," He says smiling and chuckling a bit.
"Oh, uh, Thank you, but what are they for?" I say looking at his eyes.
He turns to face me smiling.
"To say sorry for all the noise, you do need sleep as well, we'll be done soon, you have my word." He says as he walks back to the door and turns back around.
"Oh it's alright I couldn't sleep anyway,"
"Would it help if I turn the light off?" He says sort of chuckling and looks down.
"Probably," I say giggling.
"Okay, well have a good sleep, Alaska." He smiles when he says my name.
"Thanks, Liam," I bite my lip.
He turns the light off as he walks out.
I hope I looked alright, I hope my hair wasn't a mess. I hope I see him again. When I wake up the following morning, I am overwhelmed by butterflies, the kind you get in your stomach, not the ones with wings and eyes.
"Happy birthday precious," My mum is already here and is carsing my cheek, how long have I been asleep.
"Thank you, mum. How long have I been asleep for?"
My mum smiles.
"Not to long, sweet."
Not to long mum and Timo usually get here around ten-ish, but I guess it's alright I feel alot better well, for someone with cancer anyway. Today is a big day, today I get to go into town, not for too long, but long enough.
Dr Mell walks in with some of my other doctors, they are holding a chocolate covered cake with fifteen lit candles and are singing happy birthday. I don't think they counted the candles right because I'm not five, but I don't want to be rude so I smile. I hope it's convincing. My brother Timo is in the corner cracking up and filming me and the doctors.
"Come on Timo, can you please cut the first piece I'll film for you," I say and I make sure he is closest to the eldest doctor who practically looks like a raisin. He nods, obviously not thinking anything of it. I cover my mouth and giggle whilst I take the camera.
As soon as Timo hits the bottom of the cake I yell out, "KISS THE CLOSEST WOMAN!!" It's an old tradition but it's still funny. When Timo realises what I just said his eyes widen as he slowly turns toward the elder lady and leans in to kiss her on the cheek, but she turns her head at the perfect moment and he ends up kissing her on the lips.
He squeals and turns his head and I'm laughing so hard I forget how much my chest is hurting.
"Come on Alaska, you should go take a shower and get ready for town, kay," Says Timo wiping his lips.
I nod.
When I get up Dr Mell has to guide me toward the door. When we finally reach the door I ask if I can walk by myself. She shakes her head and guides me down the hallway toward the bathroom. When she finally leaves I turn and face the mirror.
I have sort of long brown hair which is oily due to not showering, a mix of green, brown and blue eyes. I have long eyelashes. I'm tall and not skinny but not big so I'm medium. I'm not pretty, and I'm not ugly.
I jump in the shower and scrub myself top to bottom, I'm happy I'm still able to do that. When I get out there's a towel waiting and some clothes.
Today my mum has left me a black singlet with a daisy on the middle and in small writing underneath the flower in cursive writing it says 'Love'.
I also have to wear faded blue shorts that are ripped at the ends of it and I'm wearing black sneakers with white shoe laces. This is me.
I braid my hair into two braids one on each side and put on some blush, foundation and mascara, just to enhance my look. I'm done .
