I had never expected this kind of confession from Dorthèe and Anna her own sister!? Well I'm glad us horses don't have to be concerned with all this stuff I thought to myself.
BANG!
Cobalt's hoof slammed into the boards on the left side of my stall, jerking me from my thoughts.
"What?!" I asked thoroughly irritated. The pain was still bad, even with Doctor Judy's pain medication that she gave me an hour ago.
"You okay? You zoned out and I've been trying to get your attention for the last five minutes!" He exclaimed in his deep bravado tones.
"Yes" I replied listlessly. "I just keep worrying about Anna, I haven't seen her since Dr. Judy came by an hour ago.
Well, she should be okay, she's a tough cookie you know. In fact, here she comes now." Murmured Cobalt in a slightly surprised tone.
Anna came up to my door and hugged me. I eyed her carefully before wrapping my neck around her.
"Sweet girl, this shouldn't of happened to you." Anna murmured. " I still have to ride, but you have to have six months of stall rest." Anna said glaring at me, blue eyes glittering sternly. " maybe Veronica would let me ride you?" She turned to look at Cobalt.
While Moon was on stall rest, Anna got to ride Cobalt once a week as well as another pony, Candlelight. Candlelight was a new resident and she was being taught how to go on the bit and listen to the cues that her rider gave her. She was very sweet, and had never bitten or bucked and she was in the stall opposite mine. We talked sometimes, when Cobalt was asleep and I would be up during the night bored to tears about the stall rest and how Anna was and who knows what else....
------------------------- Six Months Later -------------------------------------------
I woke up with a snort, jerked from the dreams of Anna on my back and the feel of my legs, all four healed. We were cantering around the arena and we were in tune to each other, Anna barely had to shift her seat and we would move as one. Cantering in circles, lead changes, all of it. My strides supple and long, hind quarters engaged. This was freedom.
Anna came down a few minutes later, practically jumping with joy as she walked down the steps from her room in the hay loft. " Moon you're gonna be better!" She squealed, barely containing her excitement. Max was down a few minutes later and told Anna to start feeding.
Cobalt woke with a snort and started banging on his door, a sure declaration that he wanted his food and he wanted it NOW. He pinned his ears as the horse to his right, Rose got her food first. Anna was back in a few seconds with his coffee can full of grain and a flake of alfalfa and hay.
"Now Cobalt" Anna said, giving him a piercing glare, " don't you dare charge at me, or I'll keep your grain from you" Cobalt had the decency to keep calm as Anna deposited the grain in his bucket and laid the hay on the ground. He hesitated a half of second before shoving his muzzle into the grain bucket, that he hit his nose on it. He snorted, looking miffed for a moment, before continuing to eat his merry way through the hay and grain.
Anna came to my stall next, she had the usual hay and alfalfa mixture that was a little bigger than usual and dropped it into my stall. " I'll be back with your bran mash in a moment" she murmured to me, before placing a kiss on my white nose. True to her word, Anna was back a few minutes later, with a steaming bowl of bran mash with oats, carrots, apples and molasses, as well as my pills which were a pain killer and a sedative ( if needed). I pricked my ears and let out a joyful whinny, I hadn't had a bran mash in forever! I hadn't been allowed any oats, just hay for the last six months.
I could barely contain my excitement as Anna dumped it into my pail. I plunged my mouth eagerly into the warm gooey goodness, barely caring that there were pills hidden in it. " hey" protested Cobalt " why do you get a bran mash and I don't?"
I lifted my muzzle " maybe it's because you need to trim down a little" I said jokingly. " you've already finished your grain and hay, it's like you've inhaled it or something"
he snorted and muttered " you mare always have to have the last word"
"Yep" I replied as Cobalt gave me the evil eye.
