Chapter One: Runaway like It Was Yesterday

The night sky approached as my brother, Atomic Bomb, and I walked side by side. The normally scorching desert heat started to cool down as the sun disappeared behind the clouds. My brother looked at me and smiled, I could barely see his bright brown eyes behind his shaggy black hair that covered them.

“Static, let’s go find some shelter. There’s no point in us waiting out here to get ghosted by some Dracs,” Atomic finally broke the peaceful silence, reminding me of the harsh reality that we were on the run from BL/ind. Or “Better Living Industries”, the company that took over what was once called “The United States of America”. They controlled everyone, except for the KILLJOYS, who had rebelled against them, refusing to become one of their brain-dead zombies. Killjoys are always on the run from the Draculoids (Dracs) and ghost them whenever we can. Our mission is solely to take down BL/ind and make the world better with some color, instead of the dull, black and white settings.

I nodded, “Alright, I think there’s an abandoned gas station nearby, we can refuel and get some rest there”

I’m Static Cyanide; my brother calls me Static for short. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY except him can call me that. I have long black hair that I either let down or put up into pig tails. My eyes are brown, but I always cover them up with my sunglasses. I’m 27 years old, my brother is 29.

Once we got to the gas station, Atomic started to fill up the tank, and I got out my “Vend-A-Hack” and took about 5 or 6 cans of “Power Pup” (Canned Food, which I’m pretty sure used to be used a dog food that BL/ind provides for their “citizens”). Right as I was taking the last can of Power Pup and putting it into my backpack, where I kept all of our stuff, I heard a shot. I jumped, and without hesitation, pulled out my two, purple ray guns from their holsters.

“Atomic, it looks like we have some Dracs on our hands,” I shouted over to him. He nodded and took out his ray guns as well. He flung open the glass door and two of the ten Dracs fell to the ground. Then he ran back inside (after shoving a shelf in front of the door to block it) grabbed my arm, and pulled me to the corner of the room.

“If something happens to me, Static, remember that I love you,” he whispered in my ear as he hugged me, for what might be the last time.

“NO! I want to help you. You can’t leave me, not now,” I said in between sobs.

“Static, I want to protect you, that’s what I’ve done my whole life, I can’t let you fight this time. We haven’t fought this many at once before. You have to trust me,” he reached up to his neck and took a silver necklace in the shape of a black widow and handed it to me. “Keep this with you, no matter where you are, it will protect you,”

“But what do I do if something happens to you?”  I asked with tears rolling down my face.

“You fight; show them that they can’t stop you. Give the kids a show,” he clasped the silver necklace around my neck. “And when you get lonely think of the song I used to always sing to you,” he pulled my closer for one last time and sang the chorus of “Die for You” by Black Veil Brides (our favorite song as kids) “I bleed for you, forever I will lie awake. I would die for you. I see the truth. I’ve given you my heart to break. I would die for you,”

“I love you Atomic,” I held onto him tighter, not wanting to let go. Just then, we heard the doors being kicked open.
