You and Kenma have been best friends forever, attached at the hip since your first day at kindergarten. You being the outgoing person you are had ran right up to the first person you saw and insisted to be best friends. That person of course was Kozume Kenma, and well clearly opposites attract. Kenma was very shy, and always kept to himself, at least that was how he was perceived by the rest of your classmates. To you and your mutual best friend Kuroo he was the kind of person to get mad at his video games, resist the urge to laugh at your terrible jokes, and make witty comments that you couldn't help but find funny.
When you and Kenma first started getting to know each other you couldn't have been more different but as time passed and you spent more and more time together, there was no telling the two of you apart. Late nights spent gaming, sleepovers on the floor, and socially awkward encounters, you were truly two peas in a pod.
Naturally your families had grown close and essentially fused together as if they were blood relatives. But as perfect as everything seemed there is always a catch.
Kenma often struggled with his mental health. He would often spiral into states of depression and it didn't take much to trigger them. You remember one time when you were about 13 years old, Kenma had been getting picked on at school for his long hair and the way he kept to himself all the time but normally you were there to protect him. But on this particular day you were absent, on your way back from a trip over the holidays. When you got home you immediately texted kenma but received no reply so took the initiative to walk the one block distance to his house. His mom let you in with a greeting and then you rushed up to his room and found him crying in the corner.
"Kenma?" you had asked in a tentative voice.
His reply left an ache in you you didn't understand was possible. "I'm...not good enough." Such simple words but you could see just how true he believed them to be. "I should just go away." He added. Your reply was instant.
"You can't disappear idiot!" "I need you." The second part came out as little more than a whisper because your voice had left you and been replaced by a lump in your throat.
The next thing you remember is sitting next him and placing your head on his shoulder and him saying "Well I guess if it's for you, I'll stick around."
But that was in the past, and for right now Kenma was his normal self and you had to hurry up and get to school. You drag yourself out of bed and into the bathroom and sleepily brush your teeth, then pull a brush through your hair. Maybe staying up until 3 in the morning when you had to be up at 7 wasn't such a good idea. You head back into your room and fall onto your bed picking up your phone to check your notifications. While clearing out all the junk, a text from Kenma pops up on your screen.
"How are you holding up?" It reads.
You chuckle a bit before typing a reply. "Not so great, but at least we beat the level." While awaiting a new text you pick up the pieces of your school uniform and begin getting dressed. Ding, you run back to your phone to see what he said.
"Yah lol," As your reading it you notice the time, shit it's 7:45 and you still have to meet Kenma before walking the 10 minutes to school and be there be 8. You set off in a mad dash down the stairs. Your mom gave you a surprised look as you grab your school bag and dash out the door. "Bye mom!" You yell behind you. It only takes you two minutes to run to Kenma's and wait outside his door. It doesn't take long for the door to open up, revealing a sleepy Kenma behind it.
"Good morning solider" You giggle, while bringing your hand to your forehead in a salute. "Stop, your being weird" You only smile bigger.
"Welp to bad, did you eat? The look of shame flashes over Kenma's face, he hadn't and he knows how mad it makes you when he doesn't take care of himself properly. You were about to lecture him when he snaps his head up to look right in to your eyes with a mischievous look on his face.
"Did you?" He asks, definitely mocking you. "Ahh-" You drag out the word not wanting to give your answer.
He rolls his eyes and ducks inside. You two were going to be late. He comes back out 5 minutes later with two pieces of toast, one in his mouth and one in his hand that he extends out to you. You grab it and mutter thanks before taking a bite. On the walk to school you talk about the game you had been trying to beat together last night, Kenma was teasing your terrible skills, he had beat it in about two hours where as it took you almost 5.
By the time you get to school the bell had already rung and the campus was deserted. You give each other an amused look and start running toward the front doors. This has happened way to many times and when you peep your heads into the office to let them know your here the secretary just nods.
"Kozume and y/n again?" She sounds so irritated but you can't help but snicker. "Yea" Kenma's reply is quiet, he's shy with other people.
Luckily you're in the same homeroom and don't have to face the embarrassment alone. You enter in front with Kenma almost hiding behind you. When the door opens every head snaps to you two. Kenma immediately rushes to his seat hiding his face with his long bleached hair.
"Sorry sir." You say bowing slightly before heading to your seat as well. He grunts and nods before continuing on with the lesson. The hours pass by at the speed of a snail, teachers droning on is about the most boring thing on the planet to you but you still manage to keep your grades relatively good. Kenma on the other hand, he doesn't pay any attention at all. Normally he's to busy hiding his phone while playing games and texting Kuroo and you.
The lunch bell finally rings and you hurry up to your usual meeting spot on the roof. Kuroo is already waiting for you. "Hey shorty!" He calls out.
You run over and pretend like your about to attack. You don't like being called short even if it's true, especially compared to him. You sit and chat while waiting for Kenma to show. When he does he sits next to you and groans before lying on his back.
"Rough class" You asked, semi- sarcastically.
His small nod makes both Kuroo and you crack up. His little moods were so funny. The rest of lunch is spent sharing bentos, laughing, and chatting about random things. "Ah I'm so happy it's Friday!" You exclaim. "Yup, and that means tomorrow is BBQ night." Kuroo added. Every Saturday night your's and Kenma's parents held a backyard barbecue at your house and usually Kuroo came as well. You nod in agreement with your rooster haired friend.
The rest of the day drags on as normal and the time for dismissal couldn't have come soon enough. When that final bell does ring you grab your bag and rush out of the classroom. You plow through the crowded hallway of second years towards the doors and are surprised to see Kenma waiting for you in the front hall. Normally he has volleyball practice right after school but then again, it wasn't uncommon for him to skip.
"Kuroo is going to be mad if you skip you know." "I know," His reply makes it clear he really doesn't care. You laugh at his response and push open the doors only to find, it's raining. "Uh Kenma, I don't suppose you brought an umbrella?" His look of dread is the only conformation you need, shit.
