Mercy Penelope Tate was nine years old when she became a temporary ward of Eichen house. The asylum is known for it's rich history of housing people just beyond saving. (It was also the supernatural hellmouth of Beacon Hills, but that's a story for another time). The asylum was her home, and it was what she knew.
The story was quite simple, actually. When Mercy was nine years old, she was in her families van with her two sisters and mom when someone shot at them, causing the vehicle to flip over, which instantly killed her mother, Evelyn, and younger sister, Kylie Tate.
It was tragic, the town mourned— as did Mercy's father. But there was one body that still wasn't found.. Mercy's twin sister— Malia.
The police had decided it was likely that animals had gotten to it, but were scared off by the sound of sirens before they could divulge into anyone else. But at nine years old? Mercy just wasn't buying it.
She felt it in her gut— that her sister was still out there somewhere, alive and looking for her.Officials thought her as crazy, grieving and needed a fairytale to cope.. and her father? Well he tried to to help, he really did. But there was only so much he could do for her as a single father. Mercy was asleep more than awake, had nightmares for breakfast and refused to stop living in the past. She just couldn't move on.
So he put in Eichen house less than two months later, hoping they could help her get better, but she wasn't getting better. So she stayed.
Henry Tate visited his daughter almost every day— just hoping that one day he could get part of his family back, get his daughter back. He missed her so much. But Mercy wasn't alright, those events kept a hold on her from the moment they took place. And since that night, Mercy Tate had spent her entire childhood being a mental case.
She's been tested, trained— had her memories toyed with, all for "the greater good". And it left scars.
Seven years later, at the ripe age of sixteen, Mercy Tate is declared sane, and is being released. She can finally have her life back.
And the first thing she's doing as a normal teenager? She's going to high school.
She's spent her entire life behind mental institution walls, she's become accustomed to it, but now its time to readjust. And just as fast as Mercy was set free, she's un-ironically (and somewhat unwillingly) thrust into the world of the not so subtle supernatural, which she so greatly wanted to avoid. What good is being supernatural if you get killed for it? But she is soon to learn her life is not all it was made out to be, while still holding out hope for her sisters return.
