“Do you have anything to say?” The principal, Mr. Linus, leans forward in his seat, staring at the three of us intensely. He’s a middle aged, almost bald man and he’s known for overlooking most things, but being extremely strict when he doesn’t. And unfortunately, he chose not to ignore what happened during lunch. I just clench my jaw, anger pulsating through me, but I don’t say anything. It wouldn’t change anything anyway.

“They just came at me! I didn’t do anything!” Jason suddenly exclaims and when I turn to glare at him he actually flinches and backs away as though he’s scared of me. Fucking jerk. “You don’t actually believe this, do you?” Marco gestures toward Jason and stares at the principal in disbelief. “Jason, you may go” He dismisses him with a wave of his hand and I don’t miss Jason’s smug smirk when he walks out. I can’t believe this. He’s the one responsible for all of this, he’s the one who bullied me for the past two years and yet he just walks away without so much as a detention.

“But he started it!” Marco all but yells, standing up. He must be thinking the same thing as me, but I’ve realised a long time ago that standing up to these people is useless. “A month of detention. Both of you” Mr. Linus sighs and my eyes widen. “But I have work. I can’t stay longer after school” I stammer and he takes a deep breath again. “Lunch detention it is then” Marco opens his mouth to protest, but I drag him out of the office behind me before he gets the chance to.

School is finished by now and I can’t wait to finally get out of here. I have work, but anything is better than being stuck in there for another minute. “Wait!” Marco runs after me, but I ignore him. I need to catch the bus or I’ll be late. I make it through the glass doors at the last second, but he doesn’t give up and follows me, sitting down beside me.

“Why didn’t you tell him what really happened?” He stares at me from the side and I just shrug. “Because it’s pointless” “I’m sure he would have done something if you told him how they treat you“ He insists and I finally turn to him. “You just don’t get it do you?” He stays silent, almost looking scared and I keep going. “Do you really think teachers don’t realise what Jason and his friends do? Because they do. They just decide to ignore it and talking about them wouldn’t change a thing” Thankfully my stop comes up and I get off, walking quickly to the café.

“Sorry I’m late” I mumble at Tom and he wordlessly hands me an apron, probably noticing my nose. “Hi, what can I-“ I step behind the register, only to find Marco standing in front of me. “I’m just trying to help” He seems genuine, but I just shake my head. “Trust me, it won’t turn out well for you. And if you’ll excuse me, I have to work” He tries to say more, but I’m already moving on to the customer standing next in line. And it just happens to be Kyle.

“Hey” He grins widely at me and I can’t help but smile back. “Caramel Latte with salt and cream coming right up” He chuckles slightly while handing me the money and somehow all my problems seem a little less horrible than before. I see Marco sitting on a table and staring at me almost angrily. What the hell is his problem?

By the time my shift ends, both Marco and Kyle are still sitting on their tables. Tom almost kicked Marco out because he didn’t order anything and I was hoping he would just leave but of course he didn’t. Now I was left to close up with two guys who both wanted to be my friends. I think.

“I’m closing up now” I stand between their tables and they looked up at me, Kyle smiling and Marco frowning. A few minutes later the three of us are standing outside, awkward silence hanging over us like a dark cloud. “You’re not even going to introduce me?” Marco finally breaks it and scowls at me. “Kyle, this is Marco. Marco, this is Kyle” I sigh and they shake hands.

“Guys, I’d love to just awkwardly stand here with you, but I really need to go home” I say after another few minutes and Kyle immediately chimes in with an “I can drive you”. I’m left alone with Marco while Kyle gets his car and I can feel him staring intensely at the side of my head. “What?” I snap, tired of his weird behaviour. “You refuse to let me help you or even talk to you, but that guy gets to drive you around?” He seems so angry and I furrow my eyebrows in confusion. “What exactly is your problem?” I have to stop myself from yelling.

Who does he think he is, telling me how to behave and who to talk to? “Nevermind. I’m leaving” He replies and walks away, just like that. I let out a frustrated groan, but then Kyle drives up next to me and I smile, because it’s impossible not to with him. “So was that your boyfriend?” Kyle breaks the awkward silence after a few minutes of driving and I almost burst out laughing. “No, no” I quickly say and he relaxes visibly. “Good, that means I don’t have competition” He grins at me and it feels like my heart stopped.

What am I supposed to say? What am I supposed to do? Thankfully we arrive at my house in that exact moment and I hastily get out of the car. Before I open the door, I turn around once more, seeing his care still in the drive way. I smile and wave at him and then close the door behind me, taking a deep breath. What mess have I gotten myself into this time?
