"Wake up Goldie!" My head was hung to my chest when I snapped awake. The wind was rushing through my hair as familiar the buildings on La Cienega passed us by. "C'mon mate, we've only been in the car for 5 minutes."
I was sitting in the passenger seat of Harry's white Mercedes. I had expected him to show up in something new today but he surprised me when he rolled into the driveway. I was embarrassed to have fallen asleep so easily, but I had been up all night too excited to even close my eyes. The wind and smell of Harry's car had me out like a light.
"Sorry," I responded meekly. "I couldn't sleep last night."
"S'alright, we all have those days." He looked over with a small grin, I couldn't see his eyes behind his dark sunglasses. Looking to the left I could see the sign for Record Plant, only a beautiful 8-minute drive from my house. "Perk up, yeah?"
"I'm ready," I grinned back at him. The excitement from last night was back, thrumming through my bones. He lowered his glasses in response, surveying me with squinted green eyes. "I promise, I am ready!"
He pulled into a parking spot that was seemingly waiting for him. I had wondered if that was true if they actually cleared spaces leading up to Harry's visits. It was weird seeing the studio in broad daylight, the lobby was much less charming when the fluorescent lights were on. Barbara's desk was empty, but her sweet candy perfume was lingering in the air.
Harry walked dismissively past the front desk, straight to the last studio door in the hallway. You could hear music and loud voices pouring out of the crack beneath the door, along with the strong odor of marijuana. Harry gave me one look before throwing the door open and announcing his arrival. Like they were seeing him for the very first time, everyone cheered. It was unbelievable.
"Hello, guys and gals!" He plopped himself on a couch in between a woman with dark hair and an attractive man with a beard and shoulder-length hair. His arms went to wrap around them before looking back up to me. "Goldie, this is my guitarist Mitch. Mitch, this is the very talented Goldie Girl." I flushed at his compliment, but he mistook the blush on my cheeks. "Don't get ahead of yourself, Goldie. This is Sarah, my drummer and Mitch's lover."
It wasn't that Mitch wasn't handsome because he was. But he was sitting next to Harry Styles, and there was absolutely no way anyone's looks could compare to Harry Styles'.
"It's great to meet you guys! I'm actually a big fan of yours, Sarah. You were with Hot Chip before Harry right?" My response had Harry's eyes rolling out of his head. The narcissist couldn't handle my interest in someone other than him. Sarah, on the other hand, lit up. So did Mitch for that matter.
"Anyway, Goldie, you know Babe." He stood up and brought me over to where Barbara sat in her glasses that were too big for her small body, surrounded by a girl with ginger hair and a man twice her size. She grabbed my hand and gave it a squeeze, allowing Harry to introduce me to the others. "This lady here is my keyboard player, Charlotte and the giant is Adam the bassist," I said hello to both of them with Barbara still holding my hand, keeping me in place. "No Tom yet?"
"He'll be here in a minute, Jenny showed up with the kids when we were leaving," Adam answered him, to which Harry sighed. He left me with the girls, pulling Adam to the side of the room where Mitch and Sarah were sitting.
I put my guitar case down, taking a seat next to Charlotte facing the booth. I had a hard time concentrating on the conversation, my mind wandered to a vision of Harry and I huddled in there together singing into the mic. My stomach filled with nerves.
I couldn't recall when I decided I was enamored with Harry, but at that point, there was no turning back.
The swinging of the door interrupted my thoughts. In strolled a man with dirty blond hair, holding a bottle of wine and a guitar case. I looked to catch Harry's reaction to the man who I assumed was Tom but caught him rubbing his finger all over his gums. It felt like my mouth was full of cotton.
