Tired and exhausted from work, Aimi dragged her feet as she slowly walked back home. All she could think of was a nice long bath, a delicious meal and a good night's sleep. She rarely enjoyed the 10-minute walk back home from the train station and this was one of the days she dreaded it more than anything else.
"Finally..." she groaned as she saw the light of the lamp post near her house coming into view. After what seemed like eternity, she reached her house only to see a pile of gifts, presents and letters at her doorstep.
"What in the world is this?!" She could hardly believe her eyes. Why did she receive so many presents? Unsure of what to do, she decided to bring them in and check if they were really hers.
After an hour of checking, and checking, and checking again, she confirmed that they belong to her. Curious about who sent them and why they would send them, Aimi decided to open them, reluctantly saying goodbye to the plans she made for that night.
"Why are they all anonymous? It seems that they were sent over a period of time and only reached me now.. But why?" Aimi could not understand why she received so many gifts but decided to ignore the lingering questions and go to bed as she could barely think of anything logical.
Over the next few days, Aimi was kept busy at work and did not manage to find any time to think about the presents. But to her liking, she did not receive any more strange anonymous gifts so she just decided that it was from a secret admirer and shake it off.
Unfortunately, after another long day at work, she saw another pile of letters and presents, except it was less than the previous week's, at her doorstep. This time, she was a bit frightened and creeped out by what was happening. She did not touch the presents and went into her house quietly, as if there was a stranger in there, waiting for her to come home.
Out of the blue, her telephone rang and startled her. She froze in fear, not daring to pick up the call. "Ringgggg.." Finally, it stopped. Just as she was about breathe a sigh of relief, the phone rang again.
"H-hello? Who is this..?" She asked timidly.
"I missed you so much... I want to see you.. I'm coming to you right now." The voice on the other side of the phone replied.
"W-WHAT!?!? WHAT DO YOU MEAN?" Aimi screamed her lungs out into the phone.
"W-what's wrong?" The stranger replied, puzzled.
"I won't allow it! You can't come here!!" she replied, so frightened that the as on the verge of tears.
"Why not? Well if that's what you want then let's meet somewhere.. I'll see you this Sunday at the restaurant near your house okay?" The person replied, with a hint of sadness and desperation in his voice.
"Okay." The stupid Aimi who acts without thinking, accidentally agreed before she even realised what she was doing and hanged up.
Only after she did that, she became aware of what she has done. After it finally hit her, she started trembling with fear and desperately looked around for something that might be able to help. She then saw the telephone that she was still holding and decided to call the police.
After explaining the situation to them, the police advised to meet up with the person so that they could follow behind and arrest him, so that the anonymous letters and phone calls would come to an end. Reluctantly, Aimi agreed as it was the best solution she had.
That Sunday, she nervously went to the only restaurant near her house and scanned the room, trying to find out who was the mysterious person behind all those letters and phone calls. While looking around the restaurant, a particular person caught her eye.
She could not believe her eyes when she saw him sitting at a table, alone, waiting for her. Tears started welling up her eyes as she looked at him, remembering all the warm, happy days they spent together. She closed her eyes and prayed that she was not dreaming.
She slowly walked over so him, with tears rolling down her cheeks. He looked up and saw her. He called out to her as he quickly walked towards her.
"Aimi, it's been such a long time since I last saw you.. I thought you had forgotten about me.. You haven't changed at all..."
She nodded her head furiously as more tears fell from her eyes. He pulled her into his arms and embraced her, muffling her words.
"I missed you so much Ivan.. I... I thought you were gone..." Aimi said, in between sobs.
The police, seeing their reunion, awkwardly came out from where they were hiding, looking confused. Aimi, embarrassed about her stupid mistake, quickly explained about what was happening.
"He just returned from fighting in the war.. I didn't know it was him who sent the letters because I thought he was gone.. And honestly, the number of presents I received surprised me a bit..." She said apologetically.
"I sent them over the past year but they were only delivered a few days ago.. I should've guessed that this would happen.. We are really sorry to trouble you." Ivan added, trying to make up for his wife's careless actions.
After the couple explained the situation, the police finally understood what happened and warned them but decided to let them go. After making a scene at the restaurant, Ivan and Aimi decided to return home to catch on the time they spent apart.
