The wind whistled loudly. So loud in fact that, Eliza heard it through the bullet-proof windows in her dorm. Leaning against the wall, lying on the bed, she scanned through files of potential recruits. Team Rainbow needed more operators since intelligence discovered that the membership of the White Masks has grown. But budget cuts and large amounts of bureaucratic red tape only allowed one additional member. That member would then be initiated as a recruit and go through basic Rainbow training with the other recruits. Then, whoever passed selection and was the best candidate, would be sworn into Rainbow. Eliza, feeling thirsty, got up from her bed with a plain shirt and sweatpants. Firstly, she walked into her bathroom and tidied her lava-like red hair. And after splashing her face with warm water, she walked out, quietly with casual paced towards the kitchen. The building was completely silent as it was early in the morning. Sure, some were still awake but most of the team was sleeping. The door of the fridge opened, and she intended to grab the jug of water but then she hesitated and chose the bottle of juice instead.
She elected to sit at one of the tables used in the dining room instead of walking back to her room. After taking a sip, she crashed her face into her palm.
"You ok there?" a voice said. Suddenly, a spoked Eliza jumped in surprise and then looked up. It was Harry.
"Scared me there,"
"I could tell," he said with a smile. The then took a seat in front of Eliza and adjusted his glasses.
"Why are you here in the first place?" Eliza responded after she took another sip. In response, he slid a file across the table, and she picked it up, opened and read it.
"You've been looking at new recruits for days now, and I found one," he stated. Eliza's face then contorted into that of a confused child learning complex mathematics.
"Special Tactics Officer Rama, with no experience in the field. Why do we want this guy?"
"He's on his way now. Flying from Jakarta," Harry dodged the answer.
"Are you sure about this rookie, Harry?"
"Why do you think I hired him?" Harry responded. Eliza took a deep breath. She was vexed she did not have a say in affairs but nevertheless, she trusted Harry's judgement but was still sceptical about the recruit. She figured that he would need intensive training.
Later that morning, after breakfast, Eliza called a general meeting to inform the other operators about the new recruit. However, a large portion of operators were deployed to combat the growth of terrorism in certain hotspots. The remaining operators took their seats.
"Harry has selected our new recruit," Eliza began. "His file his in front of you." After reading the recruit's file, most of the operators shared the same expression and feeling as Eliza did.
"The guy is a rookie! No combat record!" Ela exclaimed.
"Can't wait to scare this street cop in basic training," Zofia joked.
"If Harry personally selected this, Rama, he might be loaded with potential," Marius said.
"What does this recruit specialise in?" Monika asked.
"Apparently, he excels at close-quarter-combat," Eliza answered.
A nervous Rama stepped out of the suspiciously black SUV that brought him to the Rainbow headquarters. He brought a small duffle bag with him and walked forwards, approaching the giant concrete building. It was late in the morning and the base was awake. The steel door was then opened by Harry, awaiting him. Rama was uneasy, his English was not so good, and he was on foreign and to an extent, hostile territory. After he stumbled out of that warehouse, all bloodied and in huge amounts of pain, he received a promotion. That promotion was in the form of a nomination to join Rainbow. It took a few months, but Harry read his classified file and was thoroughly impressed with his record. Rama initially vehemently declined the promotion offer as he was done with that lifestyle. Only a hundred hours ago, he accepted the offer under unknown circumstances. Harry then guided Rama through the concrete base and they eventually arrived at the Operations Room. After opening the door, he was met with the gazes of the operatives. Eying him down like wolves stalking prey.
