Wilbur didnt know what date it was until Techno had told him. They were cleaning up breakfast trash while everyone else was running around the cul-de-sac. Purpleds sister had dropped him off at Phils house not long after Sam and Quackity showed up. Four more of Tommys friends had shown up, but Wilbur only knew one of them; Ty. He cant remember where he met Ty, but he definitely knows the kid.
Its September fourteenth. Wilburs heart drops. Todays the fourteenth? That isnt right. It cant be right. Its a bad date, a bad, bad date. He almost drops the plate hes holding. Wil? Technos concerned. Wilbur shakes his head.
Sorry, he says with an awkward laugh. Techno gives him a weird look before throwing his trash away. Wilbur sighs and does the same. Techno heads off to talk to Dream and Dreams brother, who Wilbur learned was named Foolish.
Wilbur walks over to Tommy. Hes coloring with sidewalk chalk on the road. Tubbos sitting next to him. Purpled is draped over one of the other kids lap. Two kids that Wilbur doesnt know are drinking Capri Suns while talking with Tommy and Tubbo. Ty is laying in a tree above Tubbo. Tommys face lights up when he sees Wilbur.
Wilbur doesnt know why Tommy likes him. Hes an asshole, really. Wilbur isnt nice to Tommy. The younger has no reason to like Wilbur, and yet he still does. It perplexes Wilbur, but its nice.
Wilbur! Hi! Tommy jumps up and runs towards Wilbur. He grabs Wilburs wrist and pulls him over to the group of children. Wilbur doesnt want to be around them, but if its what Tommy wants, so Wilbur isnt going to argue.
I drew a sunflower! Tubbo exclaims. Wilbur smiles softly and ruffles the boys hair.
It looks lovely.
Look! I drew a bell! Tommy says, pulling Wilburs sleeve on his jacket. Wilbur looks at the bell. Its messier than Tubbos drawing, but he likes it.
Wonderful, Tommy. Wilburs trying to be nice. Hes trying as best as he can. Anything to distract him from today. Anything to keep his mind off it. Who are these other kids?
Im Grunk! Says one of the kids drinking a Capri Sun. He looks young. Grunk mustve read his expression. Im twelve, by the way. Your resident seventh grader. Grunks wearing a mask over his face with his name on it.
Im Boffy. The boy sitting next to Grunk, Boffy, has a mask like Dreams except the smiley face is much messier. If you were wondering, I just turned fourteen. So hes an eighth grader. Also in middle school. Why is Tommy friends with so many people younger than him? I mean, sure, Quackitys fifteen, but at least hes in Wilburs grade.
Im sixteen! Ty says, falling out of the tree. He narrowly avoids hitting Tubbo and just lands in grass. Oh, and my names Ty. Purpled laughs softly.
Im also sixteen, the boy with Purpled sprawled on his lap says. Except Im a grade above Ty. Im Quig. Does that mean that Quigs in Wilburs grade? Wilbur shutters just thinking about it. For now, hell just ignore it and pray.
Wilbur notices a guitar resting against the tree Ty fell out of. He moves towards it and picks it up before sitting down on the sidewalk. Tommy looks at him curiously as Wilbur proceeds to tune it.
Then, he starts to play.
Its a simple melody at first, nothing too specific. He doesnt have a specific song in mind as he continues his plucking pattern. He accidentally plucks the wrong string and laughs slightly. He finally has an idea for a song,
He plays a simple plucking pattern. He only hears the wind now, meaning that everyones stopped talking to listen. Wilbur brushes it off. Its fine. Its completely fine. Just playing one of your songs in front of at least ten people, nothing to worry about.
Wasting your time, Wilbur sings. Hes trying his best to steady his voice. Wasting mine. He just has to focus on the song. Not the people surrounding him, the song. I hate to see you leaving. A fate worse than dying. Wilbur likes this song. He wrote it when he was fifteen and has been revising it since, but he likes how it is now.
Your city gave me asthma, Wilbur continues. Its the title of the album hes written but never sang in front of people before. Well, he sang it to a cat once, if that counts. Thats why Im fucking leaving. Wilburs voice is slowly getting shakier and shakier. Your water gave me cancer; the pavement hurt my feelings. Tubbo snickers at the way Wilbur sings the last line.
Shout at the wall. Wilbur likes this part a lot. He closes his eyes, focusing completely on his own voice. Because the walls dont fucking love you. Wilbur waits a second before repeating both phrases.
He stops himself before he gets to the last part. He knows how concerning it sounds and he doesnt want people questioning him. He abruptly presses his hand against the strings, stopping the sound from resonating. He opens his eyes and looks at the kids around him. Schlatt and Quackity are staring from not far away. Phil and the other three adults are looking, too. Technoblade, Dream, and Foolish are the only ones not looking.
Wilbur turns red and sets the guitar down. He clears his throat and stands up. Everyones still staring. The only one smiling is Tommy. Concern is etched into Phils face. Wilbur awkwardly walks off back towards the house.
He can already tell today is going to be much, much worse than yesterday.
